{"id":1033,"date":"2009-07-15T19:00:31","date_gmt":"2009-07-16T01:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=1033"},"modified":"2012-04-20T17:18:34","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T23:18:34","slug":"the-second-meeting-of-the-female-relief-society-of-nauvoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/15\/the-second-meeting-of-the-female-relief-society-of-nauvoo\/","title":{"rendered":"The Second Meeting of the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1400\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1400\" style=\"width: 112px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/first-relief-society1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1400\" title=\"first relief society\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/first-relief-society1.jpg?resize=112%2C83\" alt=\"Nauvoo Female Relief Society\" width=\"112\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nauvoo Female Relief Society<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Emma said attention should be given to being unified.\u00a0 \u201cEvery member should be held in full fellowship\u2014all jealousy and evil feelings toward one another should be done away\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Women have a tendency to judge\/attack other women.\u00a0 Did God really make us that way?\u00a0 Or do we succumb to the Natural Woman as easily and often as that?\u00a0 I have heard of one Relief Society cancelling all meetings until the women could finally be nice to one another.\u00a0 It took them seven years before meeting together again; and the Bishop\u2019s opening words were a reminder to\u2014BE NICE.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lucy Mack Smith stood up in this second meeting, weeping of the Relief Society, and said how she rejoiced in the work of this Society.\u00a0 She was old and lamented that she wouldn\u2019t be around much longer to see the good this Society would do.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A sister\u2019s name was brought up in discussion.\u00a0 Someone said she had defamed the prophet Joseph Smith.\u00a0 The Society discussed how they could labor alongside her and possibly reform her.\u00a0 A sister was volunteered to do the job, but she objected on the grounds that she didn\u2019t know the woman.\u00a0 Emma said it didn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 \u201cWe must all be willing to look after one another.\u201d\u00a0 It was agreed that several women would talk to the woman.<\/p>\n<p>Another point of discussion was that a sister needed money, and the Society decided to offer her some money from their fund.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I love to hear that these sisters wasted no time in beginning their deeds for good.\u00a0 I am forced to contemplate how it would be to go to a sister to \u201creform\u201d her, though.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s syntax.\u00a0 Surely, those closest to, or assigned, should be open to hearing the offender\u2019s side of the situation and discover the real offense.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another thing I notice is the level of enthusiasm for a new organization.\u00a0\u00a0 Of course, we all get excited with something new.\u00a0 It might be a good idea to give our Relief Societies a shot of\u2014adrenaline; a new project, a new direction, or goal.\u00a0 If we were all to take a minute out and refocus, retrench, and reevaluate, we will remember our enthusiastic love for this organization and do \u201csomething extraordinary\u201d (Emma\u2019s words).<\/p>\n<p>The Minute Book is now online at <a title=\"Joseph Smith Papers\" href=\"http:\/\/josephsmithpapers.org\/paperSummary\/nauvoo-relief-society-minute-book\">Joseph Smith Papers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Emma said attention should be given to being unified.\u00a0 \u201cEvery member should be held in full fellowship\u2014all jealousy and evil feelings toward one another should be done away\u201d.
