{"id":10513,"date":"2019-03-28T10:54:57","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T16:54:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/?p=10513"},"modified":"2019-03-28T10:56:09","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T16:56:09","slug":"jesus-christ-the-answer-to-happiness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2019\/03\/28\/jesus-christ-the-answer-to-happiness\/","title":{"rendered":"Jesus Christ: The Answer to Happiness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The other day I saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/900061956\/us-happiness-rating-finland-happiest-country-in-world.html\">an article<\/a> on the results of the <a href=\"http:\/\/worldhappiness.report\/ed\/2019\/\">World Happiness Report for 2019<\/a>. This is a report that tracks happiness in various countries throughout the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Apparently, the United States has been taking a downward slope for a few years now. I didn\u2019t check where all countries stood, but I imagine war-torn and impoverished countries are pretty low on the list too, both of which the United States does not suffer in comparison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I was interested to read the reasons why everyone, the researchers as well as the commenters, thought was the cause of this steady downturn. Here were some of their reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Addictions<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Digital media<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The imbalance of wealth<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Shallow infotainment (this could possibly be code for Facebook)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Climate change<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Unsupported health care<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Overall negative feelings<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Declining face-to-face interaction<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As a result of their research, the researchers have decided that \u201chappiness is probably good for health.\u201d I have to be honest, this made me laugh and slap my head just a little.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Here are the researchers\u2019 suggestions on finding happiness:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Giving one\u2019s time and resources<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">More face-to-face relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Supportive social relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Cutting back on consumerism<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Getting involved in social justice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Getting help when feeling depressed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Well, once again, I have to slap my head a little bit over some of these reasons. In my mind, there is only one reason this world is not happy. Sin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And the only worthy suggestion is turning to Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">None of the responses even come close to these two answers, but the scriptures are so clear on this point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the Book of Mormon, Alma teaches, \u201cWickedness never was happiness\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/alma\/41.10\">Alma 41:10<\/a>). In fact, Alma is the one who personally feels the effects of being a truly unhappy person and finding true happiness. His descriptive words really help us see the stark difference between the two and feel the relief of pure happiness he finds. He says,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cNevertheless, after wading through much tribulation, repenting nigh unto death, the Lord in mercy hath seen fit to<\/em> <em><strong>snatch<\/strong> me out of an <strong>everlasting burning<\/strong>, and I am born of God. My soul hath been <strong>redeemed<\/strong> from the <strong>gall of bitterness<\/strong> and bonds of iniquity. I was in the <strong>darkest abyss<\/strong><\/em>;<em> but now I behold the <strong>marvelous light<\/strong> of God. My soul was <strong>racked<\/strong> with <strong>eternal torment<\/strong><\/em>;<em> but I am <strong>snatched<\/strong>, and my soul is <strong>pained no more<\/strong>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/mosiah\/27.28-29?lang=eng\">Mosiah 27:28-29<\/a>).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wow! We all are dealing with \u201cstuff\u201d that brings us down. But what if we turn to God to help us out of our own dark abyss? Can we be engulfed in His marvelous light as well? There can be no greater happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Lehi leaves his son, Jacob, with a blessing that explains the fall of Adam and Eve and the need for a Savior. He says,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cAnd now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed, he would not have fallen, but he would have remained in the garden of Eden. \u2026 And they would have had no children; wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin. \u2026 Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy. And the Messiah cometh in the <\/em>fulness<em> of time, that he may redeem the children of men from the fall\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/2-ne\/2.22-26\">2 Nephi 2:22-26)<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This is powerful <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">doctrine. There <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">is good and evil in the world and we came down to earth to experience it all. It is through our agency, however, that we can choose the good and feel that indescribable happiness. Part of our Heavenly Father\u2019s plan was to see the difference between good and evil, sadness and happiness, and choose good and happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After King Benjamin gives his great conference address, all the people\u2019s hearts are immediately turned toward the Lord. They are so overcome that in one voice they shout:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cO have <\/em>mercy,<em> and apply the atoning blood of Christ that we may receive forgiveness of our sins, and our hearts may be purified; for we believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who created heaven and earth, and all things; who shall come down among the children of men.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cAnd it came to pass that after they had spoken these words the Spirit of the Lord came upon them, and they were filled with joy\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/mosiah\/4.2-3\">Mosiah 4:2-3<\/a>).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Is it hard to relate all of this to the World Happiness Report? Can you see how the difficulties we experience in this life, whether it be depression, addiction, too much media, war, hunger, and any other debilitating, sinful state (and yes, hunger comes because we are a fallen and sinful world) can be overcome when we completely turn our lives to Jesus Christ?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This report offered such elementary solutions when the only solution is Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day I saw an article on the results of the World Happiness Report for 2019.
