With all the changes we\u2019ve been experiencing, people are wondering just how to move forward with the church. What is our Relief Society sisterhood? Here are my thoughts and observations and maybe a few ideas to get you started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ministering<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Is it possible we&#8217;ve had too many lessons on ministering? Unfortunately, this is not a \u201clesson\u201d topic. It is an action item. And a whole new level of guilt is closing in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Well, throw out your feelings of guilt. Stop it, right now! Embrace the new idea of simply checking up on those you are responsible for. People don\u2019t have \u201cneeds\u201d every day. But people generally like to be checked on intermittently (I selected this word on purpose. We don\u2019t want to bug people, just let them know we\u2019re there if they do need something).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But what does good ministering even look like? Whatever you want it to look like. Do unto others what you want others to do to you. Ask them what they want and follow through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Purpose<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Find out the purpose of Relief Society. Search <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/category\/challenge-ideas\/relief-society-challenge-ideas\/\">this website<\/a> for my thoughts. Relief Society has power from the priesthood to gather our sisterhood together through activity&#8211;that is meant to perfect us&#8211;in Jesus Christ\u2019s church. What kind of activity, you ask?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Relief Society was never meant to compete with the world. It is an organization that supports the daughters of God. We run by our own inspiration. Because we care about the one, each ward Relief Society will do things differently from any other ward. Although we follow the same doctrine, we fulfill needs specific to those whose lives we desire to touch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Activities<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Years ago, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/2009\/10\/relief-society-a-sacred-work?lang=eng\">Sister Beck announced<\/a> that the formal titles of Homemaking\/Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment\/Enrichment were to be discontinued and simply called &#8220;Relief Society meetings,&#8221; we all laughed. But what have these meetings become in your own wards? Are they still following the traditional format of once-a-month-coming-up-with-something-to-entertain-the-sisters?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">By giving us the freedom to act on our own ward\u2019s needs, our activities need to reflect our individuality. Take a look at your ward. What topic is of most interest during your Sunday meetings? What do your families struggle most with? What recent experience has your ward encountered that would benefit from discussion or preparation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Once-a-month meetings no longer fulfill the needs of the sisters. In order to bless more sisters lives some creativity through inspiration might be needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ideas to Consider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Living in these final days before the Lord comes, Relief Society must complete its final work. Gather our sisterhood together physically, emotionally, and through creative means. Identifying true needs and fulfillment of those needs is something Relief Society should become expert in.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Provide challenges to your sisters with a deadline. At the conclusion, meet together, speak in Sacrament Meeting, or discuss in Relief Society Sunday meeting those things that were learned, experienced, and strengthened.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Glean information from Church resources and magazines on certain topics such as marriage; emergency preparedness; temple preparation; protecting the home from pornography, addiction, etc. and hold several meetings in weekly succession, discussing these topics until everyone is satisfied with hope and help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Assign various, willing sisters to host humanitarian days in their homes where projects are accomplished in small groups throughout the year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Organize small groups of sisters interested in going to the local Family History Center to digitize photos, take a class, talk to a professional, record a family story, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Set up an online cookbook that can include special diets, ideas for serving large crowds, meal planning tips, etc. It can be added to by anyone and modified as new ideas develop.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Invite your ministering sisters to work with you on a certain project, goal, study topic, etc. Meet, text, group chat however you want to encourage, praise, and discuss as much as you would like.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hopefully, these ideas will spark additional ideas that fulfill the needs of your ward&#8217;s sisterhood.
