{"id":108,"date":"2008-09-12T19:43:47","date_gmt":"2008-09-13T01:43:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=108"},"modified":"2017-10-31T19:29:22","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T01:29:22","slug":"hospitals-and-the-relief-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/12\/hospitals-and-the-relief-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Hospitals and the Relief Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">As the Saints settled in the valley, and began organizing various needs for the community, it became clear that medical education needed to be addressed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There were a few male doctors, but the women wanted women to assist them in having their babies. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>As well, women were more concerned about health care and teaching hygiene. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Eliza R. Snow, with the support of Pres. Brigham Young, sent six women back east to attend medical school.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Upon their return, a building was purchased to house the first Mormon hospital.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There were other religious based hospitals in the valley (St. Mark\u2019s and Holy Cross), but this new hospital would be willing to treat everyone whether they could pay or not.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the late 1800s Deseret Hospital would serve the LDS community with an all woman board of directors.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They had to close the hospital eight years later, because of lack of funding;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>it appeared the generous offer of paying only if you could afford it was interpreted as no one felt they could really afford it, so paying became less of a reality.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Relief Societies were asked to donate money regularly, but interest soon waned.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The cost of this generous blunder was great.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">Ellis R. Shipp, Romania B. Pratt Penrose, Ellen Ferguson, Martha Hughes Cannon, Elvira S. Barney, and Margaret C. Shipp spent six months back east to get their degrees.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>They returned home to train women as doctors and nurses.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These women were also set apart by the brethren to give blessings over the bedside of patients.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Eliza Snow made it clear to the women their medical training and service would be just as critical, and seen just as important, as sending missionaries around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2549\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2549\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/Groves-LDS-Hospital.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2549\" title=\"Grove's LDS Hospital\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/Groves-LDS-Hospital-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/Groves-LDS-Hospital.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/Groves-LDS-Hospital.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grove&#8217;s LDS Hospital<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">In 1905, Dr. W. H. Groves LDS Hospital opened its doors, W.H. Groves<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>being the main financial contributor.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Eventually, the Groves LDS Hospital would just be called LDS Hospital.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 1911, the leaders in the Primary Association became concerned for the medical care of the children and created a wing at the hospital.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ten years later, an old home was remodeled to house its first separate facility, just for the children.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was named Primary Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2550\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2550\" style=\"width: 134px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/Primary-Childrens-Hospital.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2550\" title=\"Primary Children's Hospital\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/Primary-Childrens-Hospital.jpg?resize=134%2C60\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"60\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Primary Children&#8217;s Hospital<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">The Cottonwood Stake Relief Society established their own maternity hospital (one was also set up by the Snowflake, Arizona Stake Relief Society).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This hospital would come to be known as Cottonwood Hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">It was the Relief Society that showed initial interest in caring for the medical needs of the Saints.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other projects included operating milk depots for malnourished children, conducting various health clinics for mothers, as well as training for the children.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Relief Societies supplied layette kits for new mothers and saw to medical and dental care, whether the patients could afford it or not.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This philosophy just seems to be the Relief Society\u2019s lot in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The dedication of the Deseret Hospital can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/exponent1882#page\/36\/mode\/2up\">here<\/a> in the Woman&#8217;s Exponent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the Saints settled in the valley, and began organizing various needs for the community, it became clear that medical education needed to be addressed.\u00a0 There were a few male doctors, but the women wanted women to assist them in having their babies. \u00a0As well, women were more concerned about health care and teaching hygiene.
