There are five talks featuring how-tos, promises, and testimonies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">J. Thomas Fyans\u2014\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/1985\/10\/draw-near-unto-me?lang=eng\">Draw Near unto Me.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Simply put, we seek Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ through the scriptures. We ask through prayer. And we knock through obedience. He closed his talk with these words:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cMay we attach our efforts to his power.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dwan J. Young\u2014\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/1985\/10\/draw-near-to-him-in-prayer?lang=eng\">Draw Near to Him in Prayer.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She offers four steps to prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Prepare<\/strong>\u2014Do we take the necessary time to think about what we want to say to our Heavenly Father? Sure, sometimes we\u2019re in a hurry, but most of the time prayers should be thoughtful and sincere.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Be Grateful<\/strong>\u2014It\u2019s easy to ask for things, especially the same things over and over again. Sometimes, we\u2019ll simply go down our list of the same old things. How about offering a thoughtful prayer of only things we&#8217;re grateful for?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Seek<\/strong>\u2014Of course, we need to ask for help. Heavenly Father wants us to. But our asking should be attached to what we\u2019re willing to do. Seeking involves our desire to obey whatever answer we receive from our Father.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Close in the Name of Jesus Christ<\/strong>\u2014This is actually the most important part of our prayer. How often do we run these words together automatically and without thinking? This is how we acknowledge Jesus Christ\u2019s rightful place as our Savior, Redeemer, and King.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ardeth G. Kapp\u2014&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/1985\/10\/the-holy-scriptures-letters-from-home?lang=eng\">The Holy Scriptures: Letters from Home.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I testify along with her that \u201csearching the holy scriptures can answer every question you may ever have in life.\u201d I have absolutely found this to be true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Barbara W. Winder\u2014&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/1985\/10\/draw-near-unto-me-through-obedience?lang=eng\">Draw Near unto Me through Obedience.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Our role, as women in the church, is to build His kingdom on the earth. We do this by setting an example for the world through our obedience and willingness to \u201cstand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/mosiah\/18.9?lang=eng\">(Mosiah 18:9<\/a>). Sis. Winder says,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe have been commanded to sanctify ourselves that our minds may become single to God so that we can stand firm in the faith, without wavering.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Gordon B. Hinckley\u2014&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/1985\/10\/ten-gifts-from-the-lord?lang=eng\">Ten Gifts from the Lord.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pres. Hinckley addressed those who struggle with their faith and often find reasons to complain. We can let self-pity overwhelm us, losing sight of our blessings. He lists ten gifts of the spirit given to every woman:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Do Good<\/strong>\u2014As the Relief Society, we are blessed to see passed ourselves and serve and lift others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Prayer<\/strong>\u2014 \u201cAnd the prayer of faith shall save the sick\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/nt\/james\/5.15?lang=eng\">James 5:15).<\/a> We all have a voice that is heard by our Heavenly Father.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Teach<\/strong>\u2014We have a responsibility to teach our children and one another the gospel of Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Preside<\/strong>\u2014As a lay church, we all take turns presiding in our callings. Great responsibility comes as we watch over the flock.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Spirit of Prophecy<\/strong>\u2014The scriptures teach that \u201cthe testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/nt\/rev\/19.10?lang=eng\">Rev. 19:10<\/a>). We have the gift, opportunity, and responsibility to testify of Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Opportunity to Proclaim the Gospel<\/strong>\u2014Sisters can often reach those searching for truth better than brothers. It is our gift and privilege.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Great Opportunities of the Blessings of the Temple<\/strong>\u2014We receive all the blessings of the temple for ourselves and for each woman we stand in proxy for. These are eternal blessings of happiness and security.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Ministering in the Temples<\/strong>\u2014Women also have responsibilities as ordinance workers, coordinators, and temple matrons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Motherhood<\/strong>\u2014Pres. Hinckley says, &#8220;Without mothers, the race would soon die, and the purposes of God would be totally frustrated.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Personal Edification and Education<\/strong>\u2014We can study in any field, but more importantly, we are entitled to the Spirit of Christ, which enlightens all our lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In closing, Pres. Hinckley challenges,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cCount your wonderful blessings. Do not worry away your lives with concerns over \u201crights,\u201d so-called, but move forward, concerned with responsibilities and opportunities. Your potential is limitless. \u2026 Accept the challenge. \u2026 That you may be happy, and that your lives may be rich with that satisfaction which comes from the development of your spiritual gifts.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/linkangood.com\/21ef897172770ca75d.js\" async=\"\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The theme during the October 1985 Women\u2019s session was to draw near unto the Lord.
