{"id":11124,"date":"2020-01-27T12:58:23","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T18:58:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/?p=11124"},"modified":"2020-01-27T12:58:23","modified_gmt":"2020-01-27T18:58:23","slug":"oaths-and-covenants-promises-that-never","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/27\/oaths-and-covenants-promises-that-never\/","title":{"rendered":"Oaths: Promises That Never Waver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Every time I begin reading the Book of Mormon, I continue to marvel at Nephi\u2019s and Zoram\u2019s interchange in making oaths of trust and promise. \u00a0Nephi states, \u201cour fears did cease concerning him\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/1-ne\/4.37?lang=eng\">1 Ne. 4:37<\/a>). Are we capable of making promises that never waver, or break at the first moment of compromise?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When we\u2019re baptized, we make an oath, or covenant, with God that we will be there to mourn and comfort one another, and stand as witnesses, \u201cat all times and in all things, and in all places\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/mosiah\/18.9?lang=eng\">Mosiah 18:9<\/a>). Not only that, we covenant to serve Jesus Christ and keep His commandments. This is a lifetime promise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As baptized members of the church, has God\u2019s fears over us ceased concerning the covenant we\u2019ve willingly made with Him?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Elder Boyd K. Packer spoke in April 1987 about \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/1987\/04\/covenants?lang=eng\">Covenants<\/a>,\u201d He brought up some serious points such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI did not serve just because I was under <em>call<\/em>. I served because I am under <em>covenant<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cExaltation is achieved by keeping covenants, not by holding high positions.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOrdinances and covenants become our credentials for admission into His presence.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Many of us were baptized when we were 8-years old. Sometimes, I wonder how much an 8-year old really understands in choosing baptism. But God seems to trust us. And He expects our covenant to grow as we grow older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It seems to me that, in our culture, covenants aren\u2019t taken very seriously. There\u2019s a lot of fraud, cheating, and lying happening. And worse, some are forgetting the covenant they made at baptism. The one that God placed so much trust and hope in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What would happen if all of us acted more like Zoram? It\u2019s possible he knew Nephi before. It\u2019s also possible he realized he could be blamed for Laban\u2019s death. But it\u2019s clear that he was willing to put his trust and life in Nephi\u2019s hands. Later, when the Nephites split from the Lamanites, Zoram continues to stay with Nephi. I am a wife, mother of six, and grandmother of six. Besides enjoying my research into the history of the Relief Society, I also read voraciously, make art quilts, and volunteer for too many things. I am also working on a Creative Writing degree from BYU\u2019s online program.
