{"id":1144,"date":"2009-08-19T18:51:28","date_gmt":"2009-08-20T00:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=1144"},"modified":"2015-03-22T22:24:50","modified_gmt":"2015-03-23T04:24:50","slug":"presendia-lathrop-buell-kimball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/19\/presendia-lathrop-buell-kimball\/","title":{"rendered":"Presendia Lathrop Buell Kimball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Presendia Kimball is not one of our more well known names in history, nevertheless, there are wonderful lessons to learn from her life and her writings.\u00a0 Her biography is found in the Women\u2019s Exponent (a serial starting on 1 June 1883), so much of the telling comes from Emmeline Wells, who knew her well.\u00a0 However, it is Presendia\u2019s diary, and recordings, that make this life notable and remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>Presendia Lathrop Huntington was Zina D. H. Young\u2019s older sister (by<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Priscinda-H-Kimball.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7641\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Priscinda-H-Kimball-195x300.jpg?resize=195%2C300\" alt=\"Priscinda-H-Kimball\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Priscinda-H-Kimball.jpg?resize=195%2C300&amp;ssl=1 195w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Priscinda-H-Kimball.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/a> 11 years).\u00a0 She was married and living away from home when she first heard the gospel.\u00a0 She immediately recognized the truth of it and sought baptism; as well as her husband, and much of her family.<\/p>\n<p>She witnessed the glories in attendance at the Kirtland Temple dedication.\u00a0 She records how she and her sister, Zina, were in the temple praying with many others.\u00a0 \u201cWhile the congregation was thus praying; we heard from one corner of the room above our heads, a choir of angels, singing most beautifully.\u00a0 They were invisible to us, but myriads of angelic voices seemed to be united in singing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At another time, \u201cWe were also in the Temple at the Pentecost.\u00a0 In the morning, Father Smith prayed to open the meeting.\u00a0 That day the power of God rested mightily upon the Saints.\u00a0 There was poured out upon us abundantly the spirit of revelation, prophecy, and tongues.\u00a0 The Holy Ghost filled the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Presendia lost two sons early on, and while in Missouri her husband lost his testimony.\u00a0 Why is it that so many of these strong women kept their testimonies while their husbands lost theirs?\u00a0 The answer to this dilemma was polygamy.\u00a0 She was later given in marriage to Heber C. Kimball.<\/p>\n<p>Her brother, William, was imprisoned in Liberty jail with Joseph and Hyrum.\u00a0 She visited these good brethren twice in that awful place.\u00a0 \u201cWhile in prison, the brethren were presented with human flesh to eat.\u00a0 My brother William tasted before the word could be passed from Joseph to him.\u00a0 It was the flesh of a colored man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a visit, the prophet Joseph wrote her a letter, thanking her for her company.\u00a0 He writes in part, \u201cI was glad to see you.\u00a0 No tongue can tell what inexpressible joy it gives a man to see the face of one who has been a friend, after having been enclosed in the walls of a prison for five months.\u00a0 My heart bleeds continually when I contemplate the distress of the Church.\u00a0 O that I could be with them!\u00a0 I would not shrink at toil and hardship to render them comfort and consolation.\u00a0 I want the blessing once more to lift my voice in the midst of the Saints, I would pour out my soul to God for their instruction.\u00a0 It has been the plan of the devil to hamper and distress me from the beginning, to keep me from explaining myself to them.\u00a0 Our trouble will only give us that knowledge to understand the mind of the ancients.\u00a0 For my part I think I never could have felt as I now do if I had not suffered the wrongs which I have suffered.\u00a0 All things shall work together for good to them that love God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At one time, Presendia was riding in her carriage with her little boy, when she came upon some men she knew meant harm.\u00a0 They stopped their horses and watched as she rode by.\u00a0 She forced herself to ride at a normal pace, but was very frightened by the encounter.\u00a0 Only days before, a man had been shot while riding along that very road.<\/p>\n<p>In Emmeline\u2019s words, \u201cTime passed and the Saints had nearly all left for the west, Sister Presendia felt as if she was at the mercy of the mob, and indeed plans were laid to destroy her.\u00a0 One night a subterfuge was invented to decoy her out of doors in the dark; she felt a great fear come over her.\u00a0\u00a0 Presendia realized the danger that surrounded her and prayed for help.\u00a0 She was very soon rescued.<\/p>\n<p>In the Spring of 1856, during the grasshopper famine, everyone lived on half rations.\u00a0 Presendia records, \u201cI asked the Lord in prayer to take away my appetite and give me strength to keep up without it, so that I might give my rations to the poor children who had nothing.\u00a0 Strange as it may seem the Lord heard and answered my prayers.\u00a0 I was enabled to keep up my usual strength with scarce any food at all, and the desire of my heart was granted me that I might impart my share to those who had none.\u00a0 In that dreadful time many were the scenes of distress pitiful to relate, and some were not able to endure this severe test of their faith and apostatized from the Church and went away.\u00a0 Some lived on nothing but roots and greens for weeks together.\u00a0 Verily it was a time of trial that pierced men\u2019s souls;
