{"id":11878,"date":"2024-09-18T13:39:45","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T19:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/?p=11878"},"modified":"2024-09-18T13:39:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T19:39:45","slug":"generations-of-active-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2024\/09\/18\/generations-of-active-members\/","title":{"rendered":"Generations of Active Members"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a General Conference Odyssey post for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/2006\/10?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday afternoon session<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the October 2006 General Conference.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Over the years, I\u2019ve helped several people organize and research their family history on FamilySearch. It takes a little bit of effort to input the living people in order to connect them to the deceased people in the World-Wide Family Tree, which is what we all work off of in FamilySearch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">I have seen amazement in the eyes of a few of these people I\u2019m working with as we are able to connect them to generations of people they never knew existed. And finding the temple work has been done for many of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">How is this possible? Their ancestors joined the church long ago, but their parents or grandparents left the church. This ended the family chain, and testimony, of all of these faithful pioneers. Sadly, the people I work with have no idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Elder-Bednar.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5348\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Elder-Bednar.jpg?resize=210%2C241&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a>Elder David A. Bednar is well known for his teaching of \u201cto act, and not be acted upon.\u201d This is the first conference he mentions what he will most be remembered by. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/2006\/10\/and-nothing-shall-offend-them?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His talk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, entitled, \u201cAnd Nothing Shall Offend Them,\u201d explains the sadness of relatives, getting offended, who choose to leave the church. They cause a break in the chain of faithfulness that often takes years to repair. In his bold, but loving words, he repeats back to these less active people the consequences of what they\u2019ve chosen to do:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cLet me make sure I understand what has happened to you. Because someone at church offended you, you have not been blessed by the ordinance of the sacrament. You have withdrawn yourself from the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. Because someone at church offended you, you have cut yourself off from priesthood ordinances and the holy temple. You have discontinued your opportunity to serve others and to learn and grow. And you are leaving barriers that will impede the spiritual progress of your children, your children\u2019s children, and the generations that will follow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">And then he leaves them with this invitation:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cDear friend, we are here today to counsel you that the time to stop being offended is now. Not only do we need you, but you need the blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Please come back\u2014now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">His plea over the many years has remained the same:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYou and I cannot control the intentions or behavior of other people. However, we do determine how we will act. Please remember that you and I are agents endowed with moral agency, and we can choose not to be offended.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sooner or later, the World-Wide Family Tree will have everyone attached to it. Temple<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pres.-Nelson.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9859\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pres.-Nelson.jpg?resize=300%2C155&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pres.-Nelson.jpg?resize=300%2C155&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Pres.-Nelson.jpg?w=580&amp;ssl=1 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> work must be completed for all those who truly desire it. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/broadcasts\/worldwide-devotional-for-young-adults\/2018\/06\/hope-of-israel?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pres. Nelson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proclaims his own well-known message, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8230;every one of our Heavenly Father\u2019s children, on both sides of the veil, deserves to hear the message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. They decide for themselves if they want to know more.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Yes, one day that Family Tree will be full of the names of all of our loved ones. And if we truly do our part, by gathering Israel through missionary work and Family History, as well as preaching the gospel in the world of the spirits, what a glorious day when the veil is rent and we all can stand together in the presence of the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a General Conference Odyssey post for the Sunday afternoon session of the October 2006 General Conference.
