Beck was an amazing Relief Society President. From the very beginning, she was focused on<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/julie-b-beck-large.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8268\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/julie-b-beck-large.jpg?resize=240%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/julie-b-beck-large.jpg?resize=240%2C300&amp;ssl=1 240w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/julie-b-beck-large.jpg?w=266&amp;ssl=1 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a> two specific goals: to help us understand the purpose of our Relief Society and what we need to be doing today. She never stopped pushing and advocating these two goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in 2010, after being so inspired with what she was trying to accomplish, I came up with a challenge for Relief Society Presidents. Things have changed somewhat, but the goal setting should still work in the same way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/10\/rs-president-challenge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">original post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the updated post:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am inviting Relief Society Presidents to take on the following challenge. Please read through the following talks from Julie B. Beck:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fulfilling the Purpose of Relief Society, Nov 2008<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focusing on the Lord\u2019s Work of Salvation, Mar 2009<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relief Society: A Sacred Work, Nov 2009<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studying the Work of Relief Society, Jan 2010<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is clearly pulling us into a new direction of procedure, in accomplishing our purposes.\u00a0 Through personal revelation, she wants us to figure out how to move forward within our own wards. The following suggestion will help you coordinate goals, activities, meetings, and unity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Here it is:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decide, with your Bishop, ONE goal you feel your ward needs to focus on.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make it measurable and short term (something you can see results in two months time).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attach a doctrine to this goal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the Fast Sunday Presidency Lesson.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not prepare a lesson.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, introduce the goal and doctrine\u00a0 (keep it short and strong).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open up discussion so sisters can suggest meetings and activities that will help complete the goal. Realistically plan TOGETHER what everyone is willing to do for the goal, write it on the board, ask for a commitment of involvement, and use as many of their ideas, gifts, and talents as you can. End this part of the meeting with something concrete the sisters can go home and practice, or look forward to, during the coming month as they unify to meet the goal (whether as a group of sisters or individually).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the remainder of the time for testimonies by starting with your own.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the month, talk about the goal.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage the sisters to discuss the goal amongst themselves, at home, and in all meetings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implement the ideas that were discussed together through additional meetings, activities, and challenges, that will help the sisters fulfill the goal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage RS teachers to incorporate discussion of the goal in the lessons they teach.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use emails, or a newsletter, to share quotes, encouragement, reminders, as needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast Sunday Presidency Lesson (2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Month\u2014It\u2019s important that counselors get to show unity and solidarity in this goal as they, in turn, conduct and teach).<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not prepare a lesson, again. Restate doctrine of goal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open up a discussion where sisters can share personal experiences, suggestions, etc. Keep things focused on the goal, and positive. If someone is struggling, listen, love, support, as sisters, and offer hope.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss other meetings and activities (or repeat as needed) to have during the next month.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testify of the value of achieving this goal. Encourage your sisters to express their feelings and testimony of how the goal is affecting their lives personally. This is a great place to share the joys of achievement and fulfillment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continue encouraging sisters throughout the month with reminders, sharing, ministering, activities, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast Sunday Presidency Lesson (3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Month\u2014build on your unity as a presidency).<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not prepare a lesson, again.\u00a0 Discuss the blessings and promises of the goal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share results of the goal. Evaluate how the goal was accomplished, together, as sisters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testify to one another.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suggest another goal, if you wish, and start all over again, using each Fast Sunday to plan, teach, unify, and evaluate with one another.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invite the Bishopric, for a few minutes, to hear your accomplishment so they can receive feedback from the sisters.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>In your analysis:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did the sisters cooperate long enough to actually arrive at the goal?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it didn\u2019t work, what opinions did you see or hear?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it did work, did everyone get involved, or was it just the same few active sisters that typically jump in? What efforts were made to involve everyone (including Primary and YW workers)?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was the Bishop interested and supportive of what you were doing?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you witness an increase in sister involvement, communication, love, and unity?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, there it is. Just for the sake of example, here are some goals you may want to pursue. Remember, your goals should come as a result of discussions with the Bishop. Sis. Beck suggests we consider Faith, Family, and Service as areas of focus. If you really start thinking, you will come up with hundreds of worthy goals. Evaluating the success of the goal is the most important thing in this challenge. These are big goals with various focal points that could be either separated into smaller goals or divided up into manageable parts, tackled in step ladder fashion. Be sure to set a measurable goal with a deadline, so you can see your accomplishments, and be energized.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think Celestial<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Study about, Share, and Emphasize Jesus Christ and His gospel in our day-to-day lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Service<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family History and Temple Work<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a General Conference Odyssey post for the General Relief Society Meeting of the October 2008 General Conference.
