{"id":138,"date":"2008-10-17T21:28:22","date_gmt":"2008-10-18T03:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=138"},"modified":"2012-03-22T15:36:57","modified_gmt":"2012-03-22T21:36:57","slug":"family-home-evening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2008\/10\/17\/family-home-evening\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Home Evening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Take time for Family Home Evening.\u00a0 My husband always says, \u201cIf you hold it regularly, while your children are young, and as they continue to grow, Family Home Evening will become a part of their DNA.\u201d \u00a0We\u2019ve done just about everything for Family Home Evening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Testimony Meeting<\/li>\n<li>Game Night<\/li>\n<li>Scriptural Lesson<\/li>\n<li>Book\u00a0of Mormon Trivia (Question and Answer game)<\/li>\n<li>Seminary\/Sunday School\/Primary\/etc. Lessons<\/li>\n<li>Lessons from the Family Home Evening Manual<\/li>\n<li>Lessons from the Preach My Gospel Manual<\/li>\n<li>Go to the Movies Night<\/li>\n<li>Watch a Church Movie at Home Night<\/li>\n<li>Etiquette\u00a0dinner night<\/li>\n<li>Family Olympics<\/li>\n<li>Go Around the Circle Saying Nice Things About Each Person<\/li>\n<li>Beginning Course CD from Distribution Center. Activities that go along with the Scripture Readers<\/li>\n<li>Go Out to Eat<\/li>\n<li>Extended Family Home Evening Gatherings<\/li>\n<li>Use the Nursery Manual<\/li>\n<li>Write Some Missionaries<\/li>\n<li>Holiday Celebrations<\/li>\n<li>Sub for Santa\/Service Opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Various Topics Opened Up For Conversation\/Discussion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I wanted one of those fancy FHE assignment boards that cost so much money, but I just couldn\u2019t justify the expense.\u00a0 I was tired of dreaming and waiting, so I found an old piece of wood, nails, and paint, and for FHE we painted, nailed, labeled and created our own board\u2026and it lasted for years.\u00a0 It was the ugliest thing, but it was ours and we loved it.<\/p>\n<p>We rotated the basic responsibilities: Conducting, Song, Scripture, Lesson, Op\/Cl Prayer, Refreshments.\u00a0 Our children knew how to conduct a meeting at a very early age, our kids were in charge of coming up with a lesson (with some help from a parent, but it was their lesson), refreshments were usually a group effort, and often homemade.<\/p>\n<p>Family Home Evening is really that important.\u00a0 We had experiences that we would never have had as a family otherwise.\u00a0 Our children had a chance to feel like a true contributor when they had a responsibility to perform.\u00a0 We mixed up lessons so some were serious, some were casual fun, some were challenging, some were just plain silly.\u00a0 We were a family and it was important enough for us to spend valuable, fun time together.\u00a0 It was also the best place to teach the gospel to the kids.\u00a0 And, as parents, we wanted to be the ones in control of that part of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>It is never too early or too late to start Family Home Evening.\u00a0 Once you start, be consistent until it\u2019s a habit.\u00a0 Prepare for difficult times, but don\u2019t let that be an excuse to stop.\u00a0 Remember, our battle is with Satan, not with members of our family.\u00a0 Keep your time together short, depending on the age of your children;
