Nauvoo Female Relief Society<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Seventh Meeting was held on the 13th<\/sup> of May, 1942.<\/p>\n

Joseph Smith opened the meeting with prayer.<\/p>\n

Every week there is a long list of women wanting to be voted into membership.\u00a0 That still amazes me:\u00a0 sisters BEGGING to be a part of Relief Society.<\/p>\n

Brother Joseph felt strongly that anyone \u201cwho refused to pay poor widows what is due them be forever discontinued by this Society.\u201d\u00a0 This makes me think of two things:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This was the beginning of dues for the Relief Society.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ALL of us, today, need a system to pay for, and perform, consistent humanitarian service, lest we be \u201cforever discontinued by this Society\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Eighth Meeting, held on the 17th<\/sup>, opened with prayer and the choir sang.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know about you, but I think that\u2019s pretty cool:\u00a0 They\u2019ve already formed a choir.\u00a0 \u00a0I think that is very significant; we really need to pay more attention to the music around us.\u00a0 Choirs and various groups singing will help us do that.<\/p>\n

I have to quote this next part\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cCouncillor Whitney then rose and said she was burthened in mind in thinking of existing evils in the church\u2014was desirous that this Society become more obedient to the gospel in keeping all the commandments.\u00a0 Exhorted them to humility and watchfulness\u2014said the more she had heard and seen of corrupt numbers, the more she was stimulated to faithfulness\u2014that the gifts and blessings of the gospel were ours, if found faithful and pure before God, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n

In all of this warning, I hear a tender regard for her beloved sisters.<\/p>\n

Sis. Whitney continued, \u201cThere is as much evil in this as in any other place\u2014said she would that this Society were pure before God\u2014that she was afraid that under existing circumstances, the sisters were not careful enough to expose iniquity\u2014the time had been when charity had covered a multitude of sins, but now it is necessary that sin should be expos\u2019d that heinous sins were among us\u2014that much of this iniquity was practiced by some in authority, pretending to be sanctioned by Pres. Smith.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wow!\u00a0 These are pretty strong words for their day.\u00a0 What would these women think of our day?<\/p>\n

And I wonder\u2026instead of completely rejecting evil (like these ladies are talking about), don\u2019t we talk about way to DEAL with evil?\u00a0 It reminds me of the Nephites tolerating Korihor,\u00a0and the People of Ammon kicking him out of town.<\/p>\n

Emma stood up and said, \u201cWould that this Society were pure before God\u2026that under existing circumstances, the sisters were not careful enough to expose iniquity\u2026heinous sins were among us\u201d.\u00a0 She exhorted everyone to repent and forsake their sins.\u00a0 \u201cSatan\u2019s forces are against this church\u2026every Saint should be at their post.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sis. Cleveland stood up and said the Gentiles may not be able to curse Israel, but they can draw them into iniquity, so be watchful always.<\/p>\n

A motion was made to suspend a woman from Relief Society; no reason given.\u00a0 A list of sisters and their donations was given, as well as a list of services to be rendered.<\/p>\n

It seems they talked a lot about warning against sin and evil; striving to live a pure life.\u00a0 I guess that never stops.\u00a0 We must always be warned and urged to forsake sin.\u00a0 We think our temptations are so much more than theirs were, but maybe not so much.\u00a0 Maybe they dealt with some pretty awful things in their time period.\u00a0 Satan doesn\u2019t rest.\u00a0 \u00a0Clearly, these women knew they were destined to be the light of the world.<\/p>\n
