{"id":1429,"date":"2009-10-16T20:53:53","date_gmt":"2009-10-17T02:53:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=1429"},"modified":"2012-04-20T17:03:33","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T23:03:33","slug":"the-first-sister-missionaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/16\/the-first-sister-missionaries\/","title":{"rendered":"The First Sister Missionaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When men were called on their missions, many of them were married.\u00a0 We have heard of these men leaving their wives behind (with a household of children and a working farm) to serve these missions.\u00a0 But there were some men who took their wives with them.\u00a0 Many women served in the Hawaiian Islands.\u00a0 When men were sent to Europe to study, their wives were often \u201ccalled\u201d in the areas they lived.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first sister missionary ever called was Harriet Maria Horsepool Nye.\u00a0 She was the wife of Ephraim H. Brimhall, who would later become President of Brigham Young Academy and University, and Alsina E. Wilkins Brimhall.\u00a0 Jennie had graduated from the Academy, and was teaching school, at the time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1432\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1432\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Inez-Knight.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1432\" title=\"Inez Knight\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Inez-Knight-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"Miss Inez Knight\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Inez-Knight.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Inez-Knight.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Inez-Knight.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Miss Inez Knight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Inez Knight was the daughter of Jesse Knight, the famous philanthropic, and Amanda McEwan Knight.\u00a0 She grew up in Payson, Utah.\u00a0 When her father struck it rich, he moved the family to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Jennie-Brimhall-001.jpg\"><\/a>Provo, where she too attended the Academy.<\/p>\n<p>Jennie recalls the night she was called as a missionary. \u201cI had accepted an invitation to accompany Inez on a trip of two or three months to Europe; one day while at home making preparations for our journey, Bishop Keeler called and asked me if I would accept a call to go on a mission.\u00a0 I told him that I would.\u00a0 Later, I received word to be present at Brother Jesse Knight\u2019s home and there be set apart as a missionary to Great Britain.\u00a0 We met according to appointment, and found the bishop of our ward, and the presidency of our stake, Presidents Partridge, John, and Smoot.\u00a0 A letter was read from the first presidency of the Church authorizing the Brethren to set us apart as missionaries.\u00a0 We were then set apart, President David John being mouth in my own case.\u00a0 I was also given a certificate, and am thus numbered among the full-fledged missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sisters, upon arriving in Great Britain, spoke at conferences, often speaking in the meetings.\u00a0 Inez recorded in her journal, \u201cPublic speaking I knew would try me, but tracting I had an idea would be very easy.\u00a0 My first day at that was in Bristol.\u00a0 At three houses they took my tract and spoke civilly to me.\u201d\u00a0 But then she knocked at the door of a woman who had been offended by a Mormon.\u00a0 She took the girls to the rest of the doors along the street and told the nieghbors not to let these girls into their homes.\u00a0 \u201cI went home and cried,\u201d she laments.<\/p>\n<p>In August of 1898, they distributed approximately 523 tracts, tracted 295 houses, got into 14 homes, had 22 gospel conversations, and distributed two books.\u00a0 Inez also recorded that it wasn\u2019t easy being the only sister at a Priesthood meeting, which happened occasionally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo effective was (Jennie\u2019s) testimony that after twenty years an unbeliever who listened to her speak wrote, saying he could never forget her sincere, guileless expression and was led further to investigate and receive the blessings of membership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jennie served until 1899, then went home to marry Inez\u2019s brother, whom she was previously engaged to.\u00a0 Inez was given another companion by the name of Liza Chipman for six months, but Inez would serve on her own until 1900 in London.<\/p>\n<p>When Inez finally returned home, she became Dean of Women at Brigham Young Academy.\u00a0 She married, had five sons, served in leadership positions, as well as on the General Board of the Relief Society.\u00a0 She was also active in politics and the Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Jennie married, had two sons, moved to Canada, and served in leadership positions there and in Provo.\u00a0 In 1921, she was called as first counselor to Clarissa S.
