{"id":1453,"date":"2009-10-22T11:33:51","date_gmt":"2009-10-22T17:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=1453"},"modified":"2014-04-29T15:35:46","modified_gmt":"2014-04-29T21:35:46","slug":"patty-bartlett-sessions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/22\/patty-bartlett-sessions\/","title":{"rendered":"Patty Bartlett Sessions"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1455\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/patty_sessions.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1455\" title=\"patty_sessions\" alt=\"Patty Sessions\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/patty_sessions-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patty Sessions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Patty Bartlett Sessions was a sought after midwife and a leader among women of her day.\u00a0 Her story is worth remembering.<\/p>\n<p>She was born to Enoch and Martha Ann Hall Bartlett, in Bethel, Maine on February 4, 1795.\u00a0 The oldest of nine children, she showed intelligence at a young age, and received a good education for her day.\u00a0 She was head-strong, quick, bright, and always hard-working.\u00a0 These attributes would benefit her throughout her life.<\/p>\n<p>Marrying against her parent\u2019s will, she chose as her life\u2019s companion, David Sessions.\u00a0 Many years later, her father would say on his deathbed, \u201cO Patty, you made a good choice, better than I should have made for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The young couple started their marriage with nothing but energy and ambition.\u00a0 David set out to build a house and Patty took in weaving, which she was quite proficient at, and was greatly sought after for.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother-in-law was very feeble, but would often be called upon to help with births, where she needed Patty\u2019s help.\u00a0 The first time this happened, Mother Sessions was called to two different homes at once.\u00a0 Patty was forced to care for one of the women by herself, never having experienced this before.\u00a0 But through pure instinct both mother and child were well taken care of.\u00a0 When the doctor finally arrived, he declared Patty a natural, and urged her to continue in this profession.<\/p>\n<p>Patty cared for her mother-in-law for many years.\u00a0 One day, while pushing the wheelchair, Patty\u2019s arm slipped and the elbow was pulled out of its socket.\u00a0 She calmly settled her mother-in-law, went outside and pushed her socket back in.\u00a0 Not wanting her mother-in-law to feel bad, she never told anyone what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>The Sessions became quite well off over time.\u00a0 They were blessed with seven children; however, only three remained living.\u00a0 Settling into their life, they sought religion.\u00a0 In 1834, the Gospel was carried to Maine where the Sessions immediately accepted baptism.\u00a0 They sold their farm, their mill, their luxuries, and set off to join the Saints.<\/p>\n<p>In Patty\u2019s journal, every prominent member of the Church is mentioned in daily life.\u00a0 It is from this journal that much history is marked and documented for us today.\u00a0 As they set out west, Patty writes of several births that she attended along the way.\u00a0 Upon leaving Mt. Pisgah, she recorded, \u201cWe leave many good brethren and sisters here, Sisters Horne, E. R. Snow, Zina D. and Emily P, and many more.\u201d\u00a0 Two days later she wrote, \u201cSister Horne sent on for me.\u00a0 I went back to Mt. Pisgah and attended to her; she had a daughter.\u00a0 I rode on horseback seven miles each way.\u201d\u00a0 Imagine that, in two days they traveled seven miles in covered wagon, and she had to cover double that distance all over again on horseback.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, U. S. troops enlisted the men of the wagon train to fight in the Mexican war, leaving the women to manage for themselves.\u00a0 On another day, she writes of a sweet luxury:\u00a0 her son, Peregrine \u201cput some projection boards on to our new wagon.\u201d\u00a0 This gave them a little more sitting space.<\/p>\n<p>Patty attended the first Relief Society meetings.\u00a0 She mentioned when the Relief Society, lead by Emma Smith, signed a petition to send to the governor.\u00a0 This petition was hand delivered by Emma and several of the women, and demanded that Joseph Smith be released from prison.\u00a0 This was the first petition written by the Relief Society, and it was then quite an event in the history of women.\u00a0 The Relief Society would write many more petitions in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Being a woman among women, Patty is remembered for her service, her valiant testimony, her love for her sisters, and her great strength.<\/p>\n<p>Her life history is recorded in the Woman\u2019s Exponent, September 1, 1884.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Patty Bartlett Sessions was a sought after midwife and a leader among women of her day.\u00a0 Her story is worth remembering.
