I have to admit, I struggle habitually reading my scriptures.\u00a0 Depending on my calling at the time, I can get into a great routine\u2014or not.\u00a0 I remember praying for some major help in setting up a failsafe plan and I suddenly found myself teaching Gospel Doctrine.\u00a0 Yikes! You get what you ask for!\u00a0 But the results of the dedication I took on myself was indescribable and precious to me now.\u00a0 I gained another testimony of Christ to tack onto my existing one.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve heard a lot of people say the reason why they don\u2019t read the scriptures is because they don\u2019t understand them.\u00a0 Yea! I belong to that club.\u00a0 And if you read merely by faith you tend to glaze over the words and not get anything out of the time you wasted (did I say that?) reading them in the first place.\u00a0 Been there!<\/p>\n
I was doing my visiting teaching one day when the sister asked me what I thought a passage in the scriptures meant.\u00a0 I panicked, \u2018cause I didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 I told her I would ask my husband and get back with her.\u00a0 Years later, in a RS lesson, the teacher asked a question about a doctrine found in the scriptures.\u00a0 Then she said, \u201cAnd don\u2019t you dare go home and ask your husband for the answer.\u00a0 Find out for yourself\u201d.\u00a0 I remembered my earlier experience and promised myself things were going to change.\u00a0 And they have.\u00a0 Some people don\u2019t appreciate this, but now I have an opinion about everything.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m going to tell you the secret to reading your scriptures.\u00a0 Just remember you heard it here.\u00a0 You have to have questions.\u00a0 Do you want to learn something specific?\u00a0 Do you wonder why?\u00a0 Whatever happened to so and so?\u00a0 Why is this important?\u00a0 What does this mean?\u00a0 How can I understand this better?\u00a0 How does this involve me?\u00a0 Keep going\u2026<\/p>\n
When you have an interest in something, it becomes personal and scriptures need to become personal with every single one of us.\u00a0 If you set out to answer your questions by reading the scriptures, going to a religion class, or even just reading Sunday lessons, you will figure out how to gather the information provided through that beloved Topical Guide and footnotes, and here\u2019s the biggie\u2014the Holy Ghost will teach you the rest.\u00a0 It\u2019s really true.\u00a0 I have spent years rereading random passages that didn\u2019t mean a dang thing to me until I did some research, ran into these passages and POW.\u00a0 I giggle every time I come across them now, because of my memory of discovery.\u00a0 I love the scriptures because those passages keep piling up and now I\u2019m giggling through all five books.<\/p>\n
I still admit to an irregular routine.\u00a0 I still nod off occasionally when I\u2019m reading straight through.\u00a0 I still have loads of mysterious passages to uncover.\u00a0 But I also find my thoughts occasionally wander to a favorite passage or story out of the blue when I need it most.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
