{"id":1860,"date":"2010-03-26T18:10:10","date_gmt":"2010-03-27T00:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=1860"},"modified":"2013-09-19T14:19:05","modified_gmt":"2013-09-19T20:19:05","slug":"relief-society-meetings-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/26\/relief-society-meetings-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Relief Society Meetings&#8230;Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the risk of sounding like a nag (otherwise known as my job as a wife, mother, and woman), I revisit this daunting topic\u2026Relief Society Meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Many of us are still struggling with what to do about these meetings.\u00a0 Sis. Beck, in her <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a title=\"most recent talk on the subject\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/2009\/10\/relief-society-a-sacred-work?lang=eng\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">most recent talk on the subject<\/span><\/a><\/span>, was pretty specific on what NOT to do, and we are stumped on what we CAN do.<\/p>\n<p>Sis. Beck has suggested that we think differently than we have in the past.\u00a0 That means we can\u2019t use what we have done in the past as a marker, because it will stunt our creativity.\u00a0 We need to think anew.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, we have held our additional Relief Society Meetings once a month.\u00a0 Sis. Beck says, \u201cThey are generally held monthly, but the RS presidency may recommend that the meetings be held more often or less frequently.\u201d\u00a0 So, if we throw out the idea of \u201conce a month meetings\u201d, what are some outside-of-the-box meeting ideas?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sharing thoughts and ideas on-line (and not meeting at all)<\/li>\n<li>Interested groups meeting weekly for a series of lessons for a short period of time<\/li>\n<li>An ongoing group project<\/li>\n<li>Planning, learning, and laboring toward a specific goal<\/li>\n<li>Organized ward-wide effort working toward the Bishop&#8217;s goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Looking at things differently, we need to start here with Sis. Beck:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery bishop has the responsibility for his specific ward.\u00a0 Each ward Relief Society president has a calling to assist one bishop.\u00a0 Each bishop and Relief Society presidency have had hands laid on their heads to receive inspiration for their particular responsibilities and not for any other ward or group of Relief Society sisters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most bishops set ward goals at the beginning of the year. \u00a0\u00a0As a Relief Society, we would be wise to take those goals and help ward members accomplish them.\u00a0 Break them down into manageable activities, challenges, interests, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Our purpose, as the Relief Society, is no longer to entertain, or fill a quota.\u00a0 It is, however, to work with the Priesthood in saving souls.\u00a0 If your activity does not spiritually strengthen your sister in some way, you shouldn\u2019t be wasting her time.<\/p>\n<p>When we think of service, humanitarian service is the first thing that comes to mind.\u00a0 There is much more service that can be done.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the home:\u00a0 strengthening marriage, families, the individual, raising skill levels<\/li>\n<li>In the neighborhood: community, civic, widows, neighbors<\/li>\n<li>In the temple: family history, sharing temple cards, maintaining high moral standards<\/li>\n<li>In the last days: preach and teach true doctrines, prepare for hard times and disaster<\/li>\n<li>In the world: there are countless ways to give humanitarian service, as well as battle moral issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you meet together as sisters in the gospel with a purpose, socializing will happen automatically, and at a much deeper level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Relief Society president should oversee the meetings, but may ask the first or second counselor or recommend a sister in the ward be called to be coordinator of the meetings.\u201d\u00a0 Don\u2019t let this mandate scare you.\u00a0 Enlist the help of the entire presidency, including the secretary and Meeting Coordinator.\u00a0 Allow sisters in the ward to take on some of the responsibility.\u00a0 Involve as many sisters as are willing to help.\u00a0 Use all the talents, skills, and abilities that are available to you.\u00a0 The president isn\u2019t there to DO everything, she is there to \u201corganize, teach, and inspire sisters\u201d that all may fulfill the work of the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>After pondering the bishop\u2019s goals, decide how to set up your goal plan and timeframe.\u00a0 Help your sister accomplish the goal whether it is cooking, working on her marriage, food storage, getting a temple recommend, learning better the gospel, etc.\u00a0 Some goals may take two months, four, six, or an entire year.\u00a0 Through consistency, mini-goals, and much encouragement, each family in the ward will be blessed as the sisters accomplish these goals, strengthening themselves and\u00a0their families, and fulfilling the true purpose of the Relief Society&#8212;Saving Souls.<\/p>\n<p>Encourage sisters to start neighborhood groups that don\u2019t quite fit the purposes of Relief Society.\u00a0 Sisters enjoy getting together for Book Clubs and Lunch Groups.\u00a0 But recognize that these gatherings don\u2019t support the purposes of the Relief Society.\u00a0 Set your Relief Society Meetings apart for spiritual growth and relief from the world, and all its intrusions.<\/p>\n<p>There are certain areas all of us need help in, and there are certain areas that only a few sisters need help in.\u00a0 One meeting per month no longer fits our needs as sisters.\u00a0 In order to fulfill each precious sister, we want to cater to her by helping young mothers, older widows, time-starved workers, lonely home-bounds, every single sister under our care.\u00a0 Each sister\u2019s life must be touched to fulfill her desires, her needs to serve, her responsibilities, her purpose in life.\u00a0 Many of us will find that we are very much alike in some needs.\u00a0 We will find that some can help others in surprising ways.\u00a0 We will discover in one another buried gifts and talents.\u00a0 We will discover why God loves each and every one of us.<\/p>\n<p>By fulfilling our true purpose, we will understand, and be more like, our earlier sisters in the gospel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the risk of sounding like a nag (otherwise known as my job as a wife, mother, and woman), I revisit this daunting topic\u2026Relief Society Meetings.
