{"id":1867,"date":"2010-03-31T14:23:47","date_gmt":"2010-03-31T20:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=1867"},"modified":"2012-04-20T16:39:03","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T22:39:03","slug":"the-minutes-of-the-proceedings-of-the-first-meeting-of-the-society-in-1843","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/31\/the-minutes-of-the-proceedings-of-the-first-meeting-of-the-society-in-1843\/","title":{"rendered":"The Minutes of the Proceedings of the First Meeting of the Society in 1843"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1914\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1914\" style=\"width: 112px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/first-relief-society1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1914\" title=\"first relief society\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/first-relief-society1.jpg?resize=112%2C83\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First Relief Society<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Relief Society was discontinued for a period of nine months.\u00a0 The women finally gathered again on Jun 16<sup>th<\/sup>, 1843.\u00a0 Emma desired the meetings to continue, though she was not in attendance at this one.\u00a0 Councilor Whitney presided.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting opened with a discussion, or probably a testimony meeting of sorts, where everyone could express feelings about their helping the poor, and helping the men, as they built the temple.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Relief Society began, they had collected $500 and turned $400 back out by helping people.\u00a0 \u201cDuring the first year of the Society, much good had been done and the hearts of many were made to rejoice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sisters expressed themselves one by one, a unanimous sentiment that they were doing good in the \u201cforwarding the temple and in aiding the cause of Zion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several sisters volunteered to take wagons out to solicit funds, or materials, while others offered to remake clothing, knit items, or help in some other way.\u00a0 They all felt the angels rejoicing at their efforts.<\/p>\n<p>I would love to see this kind of enthusiasm as requests for service are laid out at our meetings.\u00a0 Eliza didn\u2019t just say people volunteered; she listed their names and what they offered.\u00a0 I imagine this was a little bit like the angels recording our names in \u201cthe big book\u201d up in heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Councilor Whitney concluded the meeting by addressing the subject of \u201cmothers discharging their duties toward their daughters, in teaching them to be sober and cultivate a realizing sense of the necessity of conducting with propriety in the Lord\u2019s House.\u201d\u00a0 The mothers were exhorted to instruct them with love.<\/p>\n<p>Mothers teaching their daughters how to prepare for the temple.\u00a0 Even before the temple was completed, these sisters were counseling spiritual preparedness.\u00a0 What did they know back then?\u00a0 Not much, but enough.\u00a0 Everything was based on faith in their Prophet and the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>May we remember our role in the Relief Society:\u00a0 To Serve, To Help the Priesthood, and To Lead our families toward righteousness.<\/p>\n<p>The Minute Book is now online at www.josephsmithpapers.org<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Relief Society was discontinued for a period of nine months.\u00a0 The women finally gathered again on Jun 16th, 1843.\u00a0 Emma desired the meetings to continue, though she was not in attendance at this one.\u00a0 Councilor Whitney presided.
