{"id":2079,"date":"2010-07-09T19:18:20","date_gmt":"2010-07-10T01:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=2079"},"modified":"2012-04-20T16:26:26","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T22:26:26","slug":"trip-to-nauvoo-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/09\/trip-to-nauvoo-part-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Trip to Nauvoo Part II"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">Continuing my report on Nauvoo, I just wanted to share with you some of the wonderful Spirit that was there.\u00a0 Everything that our Church sponsors in the city of Nauvoo is free.\u00a0 This includes all of the buildings that are there to visit, as well as the nightly productions.\u00a0 And those productions are definitely the highlight of anything Nauvoo has to offer.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Many of the buildings are originals that survived the years.\u00a0 After the Saints left, others moved in, so some of these homes have always been lived in and maintained.\u00a0 Archeological digs have discovered original foundations, and new buildings have been built over the top.\u00a0 Through records we can tell who lived where and this is how they recreated the town.\u00a0 These digs continue as the town is continuing to grow.<\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_2083\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 160px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0268.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2083\" title=\"IMG_0268\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0268-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0268.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0268.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0268.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Sarah Granger Kimball&#8217;s Home<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Nauvoo was actually re-discovered by a descendent of Heber C. Kimball.\u00a0 He was looking for a summer home for his family and thought he would go back to find the family home in Nauvoo.\u00a0 He discovered it was still standing and prepared to fix it up.\u00a0 The idea came to him that other homes could be fixed up and maybe the Church would be interested in renewing its presence.<\/p>\n<p>So, among the homes and shops, the Church now has a Visitor\u2019s Center, an amphitheatre, a Living Center (where they have demonstrations), a monument park honoring Women, as well as a beautiful temple.\u00a0 They also have oxen-led wagon rides and a carriage ride that circles the entire area.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Granger Kimball\u2019s home is one of the original surviving homes.\u00a0 When I walked in, I tried to imagine a group of women settling in for a sewing<\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_2081\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 160px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0318-e1278698349285.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2081\" title=\"IMG_0318\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0318-e1278698349285-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0318-e1278698349285.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0318-e1278698349285.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0318-e1278698349285.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Relief Society Monument Park&#8211;The Virtuous Woman<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>\u00a0session.\u00a0 The home is really quite small to our standards, but I suppose the women were smaller back then too.\u00a0 Aren\u2019t we grateful that Sarah was there to coordinate this sewing group, and perhaps eagerly urge Joseph to organize the women formally.<\/p>\n<p>The Senior Missionaries were so wonderful.\u00a0 I may be letting the cat out of the bag, but the Nauvoo missionaries are the hardest working missionaries in the world.\u00a0 They don\u2019t proselyte, but they have to memorize all the scripts for all of the houses, because they rotate.\u00a0 And wherever they are, they tie their message to the gospel and testify of it.\u00a0 There are several productions that go on every night, and guess who are the actors.\u00a0 The Living Center and the Blacksmith Shop demonstrate skills that these missionaries have to learn on site.\u00a0 They are all so happy, capable, and welcoming though.\u00a0 They have left their fear behind and jumped in with both feet.<\/p>\n<p>I have often wondered just how many non-Mormons come to visit and I was pleased to discover quite a few.\u00a0 As we wandered through the women&#8217;s statues, one little girl was madly taking pictures of her favorite statue, where a toddler is walking between its parents.\u00a0 She ran to her mother and said, &#8220;I just love this one, even though I don&#8217;t recognize the scripture;
