{"id":2155,"date":"2010-08-16T13:48:11","date_gmt":"2010-08-16T19:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=2155"},"modified":"2014-01-24T11:57:17","modified_gmt":"2014-01-24T17:57:17","slug":"maude-adams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/16\/maude-adams\/","title":{"rendered":"Maude Adams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Did you know that Salt Lake City was the birthplace of one of America\u2019s first leading actresses?\u00a0 Occasionally, while traipsing through old western towns, I\u2019ve run across pictures, news articles, and even tour guides, proclaiming the glories of the great Maude Adams.\u00a0 Let me tell you a little about her.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Maude Kiskadden was born in Salt Lake City (7<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0East and 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0South, to be exact), on November 11<sup>th<\/sup>, 1872.\u00a0 Her grandfather, Barnabas L. Adams, was part of the exodus from Nauvoo, having met LDS missionaries in Canada, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley in 1848.\u00a0 Her mother, Asenath Ann (Annie) Adams, was born near Little Cottonwood canyon.\u00a0 Annie was also an actress.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Annie Adams was known as one of the best actresses in Salt Lake City.\u00a0 But it would be Maude Adams who would achieve greatness among all the American actresses of her day.\u00a0 Annie, and a generation later, Maude, would act in the Salt Lake Theater.\u00a0 Timber, from Barnabas\u2019 saw mill, was used to build many well-known structures in the city, including this building, interestingly enough.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Annie traveled with a company of actors, eventually settling in California.\u00a0 Maude, as a little girl, would sometimes appear on stage, if an infant was needed to fill a role.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>In fact, her very first role was her playing the part of roast beef on a platter.\u00a0 As she waited back stage in a cradle, her mother was performing in a play called The Lost Child.\u00a0 \u201cOne scene called for a platter to be carried on-stage with a sleeping child in place of a roast, but, at the time of the cue, the regular baby was having a noisy tantrum.\u00a0 Annie, waiting in the wings, offered her nine-month old offspring as a stand-in.\u00a0 Maude was placed on the platter and carried in, but, rather than stay asleep, she sat up and looked around in fascination and her first triumph in front of the footlights was accomplished.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Maude\u2019s father, James Kiskadden,\u00a0 passed away when she was still quite young, so she would divide her time between her traveling mother, and her grandmother, who still resided in Salt Lake City.\u00a0 At age sixteen, Maude left Salt Lake for the lights of New York, where she was cast into more and more prominent roles.\u00a0 By the late 1890\u2019s she was a star.\u00a0 As Maude set out to make a name for herself, she chose her mother\u2019s maiden name as a more fitting name to be known by.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/maude-adams2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7168\" alt=\"maude adams2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/maude-adams2-187x300.jpg?resize=187%2C300\" width=\"187\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/maude-adams2.jpg?resize=187%2C300&amp;ssl=1 187w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/maude-adams2.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Richard Matheson was inspired to write &#8220;Bid Time Return&#8221; (original story made into the movie\u00a0<i>Somewhere In Time<\/i>) after being mesmerized by the portrait of famous actress, Maude Adams, hanging in the Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada during a trip.\u00a0 When he researched her, he found some interesting and mysterious facts about her reclusive life, and wondered what may have occurred in her life, thus the idea for his novel was born.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Never forgetting her roots, Maude arranged for the complimentary seating of the entire Mormon Tabernacle Choir, while they were touring in New York, for her performance of Peter Pan.\u00a0 This was in the year 1909.\u00a0 At the end of the performance, the Choir stood and sang \u201cAuld Lang Syne\u201d, in her honor, and the whole audience joined in.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Maude Adams never married.\u00a0 Rather, she was married to the stage.\u00a0 After an amazing career, she retired from acting in 1918.\u00a0 She began staging and directing, which became her true passion.\u00a0 Finally, in 1931, she staged and acted in her final performance in The Merchant of Venice at Kingsbury Hall on the University of Utah campus.\u00a0 She died at her home in the Catskill Mountains of New York on July 16, 1953.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Information taken from:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Relief Society Magazine, 1890, p. 244<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Utah Historical Quarterly, Winter 1970, p. 65<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Somewhere In Time trivia<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know that Salt Lake City was the birthplace of one of America\u2019s first leading actresses?\u00a0 Occasionally, while traipsing through old western towns, I\u2019ve run across pictures, news articles, and even tour guides, proclaiming the glories of the great Maude Adams.\u00a0 Let me tell you a little about her.
