{"id":2267,"date":"2010-10-30T22:25:25","date_gmt":"2010-10-31T04:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=2267"},"modified":"2018-02-26T22:10:39","modified_gmt":"2018-02-27T04:10:39","slug":"rs-poem-by-eliza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/30\/rs-poem-by-eliza\/","title":{"rendered":"RS Poem by Eliza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This poem is as old as our Relief Society is and it lovingly explains the heart of our great organization.\u00a0 This would be a great addition to any study of our history, so share it with your sisters.\u00a0 And remember it for your birthday celebration in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>The Female Relief Society of Nauvoo<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">(What Is It?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It is an <\/span>institution form\u2019d<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> to bless<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The poor, the widow, and the fatherless\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To clothe the naked, and the hungry feed,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And in the holy paths of virtue lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To seek our sorrow, grief, and mute despair,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And light the lamp of hope eternal there\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To try the strength of consolation\u2019s art,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">By breathing comfort to the mourning heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To chase the clouds that shade the aspect, where<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Distress presides; and wake up pleasures there\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With open heart extend the friendly hand,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To hail the stranger from a distant land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To stamp a vetoing impress on each move<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">That virtue\u2019s present dictates disapprove\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To put the tattler\u2019s coinage scandal down,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And make corruption feel <\/span>its<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> with\u2019ring frown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To give instruction where instruction\u2019s voice<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Will guard the feet and make the heart rejoice\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To turn <\/span>the wayward<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> from their recklessness,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And lead them in the ways of happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It is an Order, fitted and <\/span>design\u2019d<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To meet the wants of body and of mind\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To seek the wretched in their lone abode\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Supply their wants, and raise their hearts to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Eliza R.
