{"id":2288,"date":"2010-11-06T16:21:31","date_gmt":"2010-11-06T22:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=2288"},"modified":"2012-04-20T15:03:43","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T21:03:43","slug":"rs-community-salt-lake-mission-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/06\/rs-community-salt-lake-mission-home\/","title":{"rendered":"RS Community-Salt Lake Mission Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Those-That-Were-Wise.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2486\" title=\"Those That Were Wise\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Those-That-Were-Wise-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Those-That-Were-Wise.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Those-That-Were-Wise.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Those-That-Were-Wise.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>From the Salt Lake Mission Home:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was with new enthusiasm, being called into missionary work, that I set out to be open to missionary and service opportunities.\u00a0 With my missionary badge firmly in place, I was determined to accept a challenge from Elder Evans, of talking to everyone and asking for referrals.\u00a0 My first experience happened at the grocery store.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coming from Delaware, I was unaccustomed to buying enough food to require help out to the car, since back east, most people shop every day for their dinner.\u00a0 So, here I was at the checkout, when I heard the bagger say, \u201dWould you like to help out?\u201d\u00a0 I gave her my best deer in the headlights look.\u00a0 I was really unsure of exactly what she wanted me to help out with, but I decided that if she needed help I could certainly offer my services.\u00a0 \u201cSure,\u201d I said, \u201cWhat would you like me to do?\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know how to use the cash register, but I thought perhaps I could sweep the floor or collect the carts in the parking lot or something.\u00a0 She then gave me her best deer in the headlights look, and repeated herself. \u00a0\u201cWould you like some help out?\u201d\u00a0 Understanding surged through my brain, I replied in the negative, and quickly walked out of the store embarrassed at my mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to another day and another store.\u00a0 Again, in my enthusiasm for missionary work I set out to find at least one referral.\u00a0 As I approached the checkout counter, I immediately heard the checker\u2019s accent and started a conversation, asking her where she was from.\u00a0 She explained that she was from Bosnia.\u00a0 \u00a0We began chatting about the differences in cultures between her country and ours.\u00a0 I told her that even in the same country, there were many differences and told her my experience with the bagger at the first store.<\/p>\n<p>As I was finishing my sort of long story, I glanced around and noticed that the three people in line behind me were all intently listening to my story.\u00a0 The cashier in the next line over had stopped working completely, and was listening, as were the three or four people in her line.\u00a0 As they all laughed at my story, I suddenly became very self-conscious and decided that now, with an audience of a dozen, was NOT the time to ask the Bosnian clerk if she knew about the Church. My intent was to get a referral from her, hoping she would allow the missionaries to come and visit, but instead I quickly paid for my purchases and headed for my car. \u00a0I was berating myself for being a coward.\u00a0 Maybe I shouldn\u2019t talk so much, or draw so much attention to myself.\u00a0 If only I had handled things differently.<\/p>\n<p>All the way out to my car, I chided myself for being such a wimp.\u00a0 I was so annoyed that I had left the store without a referral!\u00a0 As I was loading the groceries into the back of my Expedition, the gentleman who had been in line behind me walked up.\u00a0 He started to chat with me, and I realized that this was my second chance.\u00a0 He was a member of the Church, I discovered, and yes indeed he did live in my mission.\u00a0 So I asked him if he had any friends or neighbors who might like to hear the message of the gospel from my missionaries.\u00a0 He did!\u00a0\u00a0 I got a referral!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, I don\u2019t suggest that you approach things the same way I did.\u00a0 But this is the lesson I learned:\u00a0 When your heart is in the right place, the Lord will put people in your path.\u00a0 And if you are as open and talkative as I am, all the better.<\/p>\n<p>P.S.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t worry, I have every intention of trying again with my new Bosnian friend, and anyone else the Lord puts in my path.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Salt Lake Mission Home: \u201cIt was with new enthusiasm, being called into missionary work, that I set out to be open to missionary and service opportunities.\u00a0 With my missionary badge firmly in place, I was determined to accept a challenge from Elder Evans, of talking to everyone and asking for referrals.\u00a0 My first [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[487],"tags":[397,406,407],"class_list":["post-2288","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-proclaim-the-gospel","tag-gallery","tag-missionary-work","tag-salt-lake-city"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>RS Community-Salt Lake Mission Home &#8211;
