{"id":2352,"date":"2010-12-14T16:28:38","date_gmt":"2010-12-14T22:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=2352"},"modified":"2015-11-04T23:01:33","modified_gmt":"2015-11-05T05:01:33","slug":"minerva-teichert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/14\/minerva-teichert\/","title":{"rendered":"Minerva Teichert"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_7616\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7616\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/minervaportrait_large.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7616\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/minervaportrait_large-300x300.jpg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"Minerva Teichert\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/minervaportrait_large.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/minervaportrait_large.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/minervaportrait_large.jpg?w=480&amp;ssl=1 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minerva Teichert<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Minerva Bernetta Kohlhepp was born Aug. 28, 1888 in North Ogden, Utah, the second of ten children.\u00a0 Her mother\u2019s father was one of Brigham Young\u2019s bodyguards.\u00a0 Her father was disowned by his family when he joined the Church.\u00a0 Minerva was raised in a religious family, and an artistic home.\u00a0 Since age four, she thought of herself as an artist.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up on a ranch, in Idaho, Minerva was taught all the ways of a cowboy.\u00a0 She graduated from school at age sixteen ready to attend art school in Chicago.\u00a0 She was the first woman, set apart as an LDS Church missionary, sent back east for art lessons.\u00a0 She went home periodically where she was courted by a cowboy named Herman Teichert.\u00a0 Art was all consuming, so when she received a scholarship to study in New York City, she told him to marry someone else.<\/p>\n<p>While in New York, she supported herself by doing just about anything her background, and personality, prepared her for:\u00a0 She sketched cadavers for medical schools, illustrated children&#8217;s books, painted portraits, and performed rope tricks and Indian dances on the New York stage.\u00a0 She was known for the headband she wore throughout her life.\u00a0 The style must have come from her Indian act.<\/p>\n<p>Her artistic techniques were developed as she followed the instruction of her teacher and mentor, Robert Henri.\u00a0 Although not LDS himself, he was the one who told her to go home and paint the history of the Mormon people.\u00a0 It was a calling she took to heart for the rest of her life; focusing her art on motivating the viewer to greater faith in the<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/the-bag-teichert.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7617\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/the-bag-teichert.jpeg?resize=253%2C199\" alt=\"the bag teichert\" width=\"253\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> gospel, and especially greater appreciation for the pioneer heritage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Minerva went home, married Herman Teichert, helped manage their ranch in Wyoming, had five children, and painted.\u00a0 She would tack up a stretch of canvas on her living room wall and paint all evening as the children slept.\u00a0 Her version of the Mormon story was larger than life, and her paintings reflected that, in size, as well as expanse.\u00a0 Using neighbors as models, her message always involved the human experience, especially from the perspective of a woman.<\/p>\n<p>In many of her paintings you will find pattern in the clothing.\u00a0 This detail makes her paintings rich and unique.\u00a0 She would often use a touch of red somewhere to make everything pop.\u00a0 A story was told with each piece, painted just enough where the all important message was clearly visible, leaving the edges unfinished, sometimes merely sketched in.<\/p>\n<p>She would often interrupt her work to create small pieces that she would give away for funerals or weddings.\u00a0 Can you imagine discovering her artwork buried in a musty old attic?<\/p>\n<p>Herman did not become a member of the Church until after their fifth child was born.\u00a0 He was almost immediately called into a bishopric where he served for twenty years.\u00a0 During all her married years, Minerva was devoted to the gospel.\u00a0 One of her spiritual gifts was receiving promptings and guidance through dreams, which she reverently obeyed.\u00a0 Once, when given an opportunity to study in France, after her marriage, she dreamed of a little girl all in pink.\u00a0 She decided to stay home, and shortly after became pregnant with her first daughter.\u00a0 She would later paint her daughter dressed in pink as she saw her in the dream.<\/p>\n<p>Not only well versed in the gospel, she was a political activist, often<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/betty-and-the-seagulls-teichert.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7619 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/betty-and-the-seagulls-teichert-300x279.jpg?resize=300%2C279\" alt=\"betty-and-the-seagulls-teichert\" width=\"300\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/betty-and-the-seagulls-teichert.jpg?resize=300%2C279&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/betty-and-the-seagulls-teichert.jpg?resize=1024%2C951&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/betty-and-the-seagulls-teichert.jpg?w=1340&amp;ssl=1 1340w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> writing caustic letters to congressmen about water rights, Indian rights, and Social Security (she thought it was unconstitutional).<\/p>\n<p>Painting well into her seventies, she was forced to stop when she fell and broke her hip.\u00a0 She died in Provo, in 1976.<\/p>\n<p>Her grandniece said of her, \u201cAunt Minerva was feisty, spunky, a hundred years before her time, especially about women\u2019s lib and the roles women saw themselves in and what women were capable of doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minerva wrote in her diary, in 1961, \u201cRelief Society \u2014 and I&#8217;m going. I talk too much \u2014 not about people but the lessons. Too bad I wasted ten years of talk in Fort Hall Bottoms. Sometimes I&#8217;d go for months and never see a woman. I don&#8217;t know women&#8217;s language very well, so I talk politics and religion. They don&#8217;t talk art or chicken talk so I&#8217;d better try to get in on this Relief Society deal more often.
