South Temple, is a piece of land with a history that is far too delicious to forget.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about a girl and her house.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet Amelia Folsom was 22 years old and freshly arrived in the Salt Lake Valley with her parents.\u00a0 Her father, William Harrison Folsom, was an architect and would help design and build the Salt Lake Tabernacle; Salt Lake Theatre; St. George, Manti, and Salt Lake Temples.\u00a0 Brigham Young met this group of arriving Saints and it is said that when Brigham met Amelia, it was love at first site.<\/p>\n<p>They married\u00a0 in 1863, and Amelia became Brigham Young\u2019s 25<sup>th<\/sup> wife.\u00a0 Most of the wives agreed and accepted that Amelia was his favorite wife.\u00a0 She was refined, talented, and childless.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2468\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2468\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Amelia-Folsom-Young.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2468\" title=\"Amelia Folsom Young\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Amelia-Folsom-Young-150x150.png?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Amelia-Folsom-Young.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Amelia-Folsom-Young.png?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harriet Amelia Folsom Young<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Amelia came from a cultured background.\u00a0 She was quick witted, brimming with intelligence, played the piano, sang, and was very good at entertaining people.\u00a0 Brigham usually asked Amelia to entertain those dignitaries, who would visit him.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 1873, Pres. Young decided it would be appropriate to have a separate dwelling serve as his reception hall.\u00a0 He called upon Amelia\u2019s father, as well as Joseph Ridges, to build the home.\u00a0 Joseph Ridges designed and built the Mormon Tabernacle Organ.\u00a0 The new reception hall would look very much like the organ pipes.\u00a0 Because Amelia would do most of the entertaining, this hall would become her residence.\u00a0 Brigham hoped that it would become the \u201cHome of the Presidents of the Church\u201d as time went on.<\/p>\n<p>The home cost $80,000 and was completed in 1881.\u00a0 The name of the home was Gardo House.\u00a0 No one knows how the name came about.\u00a0 Some believe it came from a Spanish novel Brigham especially liked.\u00a0 Others believe people saw the towering home as a sentinel on guard over the valley, thus calling it Gardo. The home had a full basement, a beautiful main floor with a sweeping spiral staircase, and two upper levels; in all 46 rooms.\u00a0 To furnish the home, another $25,000 was spent.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Brigham Young died before the home was completed.\u00a0 Amelia was able to live in it for a short while.\u00a0 Well, at least long enough for it to be inaccurately mentioned in a national publication that it was \u201cher brothel\u201d.\u00a0 The home became known as Amelia\u2019s Palace after that.\u00a0 Due to legal issues with Brigham\u2019s personal property, the home went to the Church, so Amelia had to move out.\u00a0 John Taylor soon moved in.<\/p>\n<p>Pres. Taylor hated the home and only moved in because others insisted.\u00a0 He felt it was garish and opulent.\u00a0 Soon, it became known as Uncle John\u2019s Mansion, assuming the idea of a \u201crich uncle\u201d.\u00a0 Non-Mormons\u00a0 ridiculed the Mormon ideal of living modestly, and in humble\u00a0 circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Wilford Woodruff also felt uncomfortable in the home.\u00a0 Using it as the Church Offices, he continued to hold all Church meetings there, including the historic signing of the Manifesto, which ended polygamy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because of the passing of the Edmunds-Tucker Act, the government confiscated many Church properties, including the Gardo House.\u00a0 The government turned the house immediately over to an alcohol-treatment organization in 1892.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It passed through several owners over the subsequent years.\u00a0 Three mining magnates lived in the home, adding to its opulent nature.\u00a0 But finally it fell back into the hand of the Church, and became the home of the LDS School of Music.<\/p>\n<p>In 1926, it was purchased by the Federal Reserve Bank and torn down.\u00a0 Today, in its place stands the Eagle Gate Plaza and Tower.<\/p>\n<p>Amelia went on to marry someone else.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Information found on-line at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historytogo.utah.gov\">www.historytogo.utah.gov<\/a>.\u00a0 Search Gardo House<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Across the street from the Beehive House, in Salt Lake City, at 70 E.
