We are not expected to ride on men\u2019s shoulders, we are responsible for our own salvation. Together, as men and women, we must reach out and bring all others unto the fold.<\/p>\n
The following is taken from The Relief Society of Nauvoo Minute Book, written in Eliza R. Snow\u2019s hand. The Prophet, Joseph Smith is teaching the women the object of the Society:<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u00a0 the Society of Sisters might provoke the brethren to\u00a0 good works in looking to the wants of the poor\u2014 searching\u00a0 after objects of charity, and in administering to their wants \u2014 to assist; by correcting the morals and strengthening\u00a0 the virtues of the female community, and save the\u00a0 Elders the trouble of rebuking; that they may give their\u00a0 time to other duties &c. in their public teaching.<\/p>\n
The charitable Society\u2014 this is according to your natures\u2014 it is natural for females to have feelings of charity\u2014\u00a0 you are now plac\u2019d in a situation where you can act according\u00a0 to those sympathies which God has planted in your bosoms.\u00a0 If you live up to these principles how great and glorious!\u2014\u00a0 if you live up to your privileges, the angels cannot be restrain\u2019d\u00a0 from being your associates\u2014<\/p>\n
After this instruction, you will be responsible for your own sins. It is an honor to save yourselves\u2014 all are responsible to save themselves.<\/p>\n
As you increase in innocence and virtue, as you increase in goodness, let your hearts expand\u2014 let them be\u00a0 enlarged towards others\u2014 you must be longsuff\u2019ring and bear\u00a0 with the faults and errors of mankind. How precious are the souls of men!\u2014 The female part of community are apt to be contracted in their views. You must not be contracted, but you must be liberal in your feelings.<\/p>\n
The nearer we get to our heavenly Father, the more\u00a0 are we dispos\u2019d to look with compassion on perishing\u00a0 souls\u2014 to take them upon our shoulders and cast their\u00a0 sins behind our back. I am going to talk to all this Society\u2014 if you would have God have mercy\u00a0 on you, have mercy on one another.<\/p>\n
Prest. S. then said that he would give a lot of land to the Society by deeding it to the Treasurer, that the Society may build houses for the poor. He also said he would give a house\u2014 frame not finished\u2014 said that br. [Reynolds] Cahoon will move it on to the aforesaid lot, and the Society\u00a0 can pay him by giving Orders on the Store\u2014<\/p>\n
The sisters express\u2019d their feelings one by one an unanimous sentiment seem\u2019d to pervade the\u00a0 hearts of all present, to wit, a desire to assist in\u00a0 forwarding the Temple and in aiding the cause of Zion.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
