{"id":3214,"date":"2011-10-26T15:16:40","date_gmt":"2011-10-26T21:16:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=3214"},"modified":"2022-03-12T15:07:27","modified_gmt":"2022-03-12T21:07:27","slug":"check-list-for-funerals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/26\/check-list-for-funerals\/","title":{"rendered":"Check List For Funerals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Funerals don\u2019t happen very often, but when they do, it is important they are handled in the most sensitive, smoothest way possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This is a list created by Michelle Linford, of <a title=\"Mormon Women\" href=\"http:\/\/mormonwoman.org\/\">Mormon Women<\/a>. She and her committee have used this, learning through trial and error, finally hitting on a helpful set of guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I will add a note that in Utah, it is absolutely essential that the Relief Society serves \u201cthe typical Mormon meal\u201d: Ham and Funeral Potatoes. The very few times I have seen a different menu, the family (each time) has sweetly mentioned their disappointment in not having any funeral potatoes. It makes me curious what funerals from other parts of the world serve. I offer my recipe at the end of this post.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Be sure to check the handbook for some of the basic instructions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Contact the family. Typically, the RS President just needs to hug, hold hands, and listen. Especially listen for special needs from this family. Information you will need to get from the family is:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Headcount for the luncheon<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Date and time of viewing and funeral<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Audio-visual needs for slideshow, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">How they want the viewing set up: tables, pictures, displays, guest book, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Any special requests: people to involve, meal, special help, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Make sure the Bishop knows.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Contact the building coordinator immediately.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0Reserve date and time for viewing, funeral, and luncheon. If there is a conflict (a stake baptism, for example) see that you coordinate usage of the kitchen, RS Room, and cultural hall, with the appropriate people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Make sure the RS room is available for the viewing. If not, designate another room.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Plan where display tables will be set up<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Coordinate help in setting up tables and chairs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The typical meal is ham, funeral potatoes, fruit\/jello and green salads, rolls, and dessert. \u00a0Sometimes the family likes to pay for the ham. Otherwise, the ward budget could take care of this expense. Everything else should be provided by the Relief Society.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Contact home and visiting teachers. Ask them to help with food or other assignment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Check the paper goods supply in the RS closet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Assign food\u2014Note: The following estimates are based on 50 guests:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1-2 hams (red-foil Costco hams\u2014serve sliced on a tray)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">3-4 (9&#215;13) pans funeral potatoes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2 (9&#215;13) pans jello salads or 3 large bowls fruit salad (Jello salads are not as popular as they used to be)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">3 green salads plus a few bottles of salad dressing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">6 dozen rolls<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">3-4 (9&#215;13) pans cake\/dessert<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2 bags crushed ice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1 lb. butter (half a cube on each table)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Make salt and pepper available from the kitchen<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Assign work shifts<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Men needed to help set up and take down tables and chairs<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Each round table can sit 8 people. Plan on 8 tables for 50 people<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2 long tables for food line. Consider setting food on tables so people can pass on both long sides, or start at both ends and meet in the middle<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A separate table for desserts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Any other tables needed for displays, guest books, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One person needs to be there at the beginning of each gathering of viewings and funeral to greet the family.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Three to four people should be in the kitchen to receive the food and begin setting everything up (about 30 minutes before start of the luncheon\u2014have ovens turned to \u201cwarm\u201d).<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Tablecloths and centerpieces<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Water pitchers filled<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Butter, salt, and pepper<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Direction of food service<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Garbage cans placed in cultural hall for easy cleanup<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Assign someone to get the flowers transferred from chapel to cultural hall<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have three people serving (keep food stocked on serving table, fill water pitchers, garbage, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At least six people are needed for cleanup.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Special notes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">*A nice touch is to have someone handing out rolls to children as they come into the room after the viewing, before the meal. \u00a0It\u2019s a long day for them!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">*Don\u2019t let the family do any work, even if they offer. This day is for them and they should have everything done to truly serve them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">*Funerals are always going to be difficult. What makes this list so helpful is experience has shown that this list works. It is so easy to forget something when you want things to go well. We want our service to be generous, well done, and truly helpful. Details are important!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">FUNERAL POTATOES<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">24 oz. frozen hash browns<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2 cans cream of chicken or mushroom soup<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2 cups sour cream<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1 cup grated cheese<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1 Tb. dried onions<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Mix together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Top with:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2 cups crushed cornflakes (toppings can be crackers, nuts, other cereals, potato chips, breadcrumbs)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2 Tbs. melted butter<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Add diced ham for a main course, if desired<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Bake 30-40 min. at 350 degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Painting is called <em>Funeral&#8217;s Procession<\/em> by Ellis Wilson.
