{"id":46,"date":"2008-07-02T22:13:34","date_gmt":"2008-07-03T04:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=46"},"modified":"2012-03-23T20:12:37","modified_gmt":"2012-03-24T02:12:37","slug":"they-call-it-relief-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/02\/they-call-it-relief-society\/","title":{"rendered":"They Call it Relief Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love the story of a Katrina survivor who gives his extraordinary thanks to the two amazing groups that helped so much in the clean-up of their ravaged city:\u00a0 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and the Mormons.\u00a0 \u00a0It also makes me very proud (I don\u2019t care, I really am proud of this) to know that at any sign of disaster, the church already has trucks on the road.\u00a0 And it is our church and the Red Cross who show up first, time and time again.<\/p>\n<p>What if the Relief Society were to have its own reputation the world over?\u00a0What if we were heading up groups that helped individuals in every major city?\u00a0 And the news announced that it was the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that was responsible.\u00a0 Maybe there would be so much going on that was newsworthy that good news would replace bad news every night at 10:00pm.<\/p>\n<p>Women, we have the power to change lives.\u00a0 Amongst us, we have the talent to meet every need.\u00a0 Not everything has been done that can be done.\u00a0 There is still work to do.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are there homeless people in your area?\u00a0 Do they need help?\u00a0 Food?\u00a0 Skills?<\/li>\n<li>Are there refugees in your area?\u00a0 Do they need help with language?\u00a0 Shopping? \u00a0Job skills?<\/li>\n<li>Are there children who have fallen through the cracks in school?\u00a0 In home life?\u00a0 Are children getting the best protection and education possible?<\/li>\n<li>Are there handicapped people in your area?\u00a0 Are they receiving proper care?\u00a0 What about the parents-especially the mother?\u00a0 Does she get enough relief or support from her sisters?<\/li>\n<li>Are there troubled marriages, teens, victims in your area that need attention, love, protection, training?<\/li>\n<li>Are you disgusted enough with the media and\/or political scene that it\u2019s time to organize and protect our families at a higher playing field?<\/li>\n<li>What talent does your ward have?\u00a0 Can it be combined, empowered, taught, to bless the lives of those in need?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we don\u2019t know how to do something, there is a sister somewhere who does.\u00a0 We can help one another.\u00a0 We can encourage one another.\u00a0 We can set our own shyness aside, when we know someone is depending on us to help them out of a horrible situation.<\/p>\n<p>Someone is going to ask you someday an offhanded question, \u201cDone anything interesting lately?\u201d\u00a0 And you might be able to tell them, \u201cYes, after taking the Hmongs shopping again, this week, I gathered up the kids at the shelter and we hit the dollar show.\u00a0 A group of us have been working with some troubled teens who are great kids and I think we got all of their mothers jobs now.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a pretty busy week, but I can\u2019t wait for next week.\u00a0 I love the people I\u2019m working with.\u00a0 What about you?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I love the story of a Katrina survivor who gives his extraordinary thanks to the two amazing groups that helped so much in the clean-up of their ravaged city:\u00a0 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and the Mormons.\u00a0 \u00a0It also makes me very proud (I don\u2019t care, I really am proud of this) [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[484],"tags":[72],"class_list":["post-46","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-relief-society-challenge-ideas","tag-bringing-relief"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>They Call it Relief Society &#8211;
