{"id":50,"date":"2008-07-08T20:07:49","date_gmt":"2008-07-09T02:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=50"},"modified":"2012-03-23T20:08:03","modified_gmt":"2012-03-24T02:08:03","slug":"family-traditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/08\/family-traditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Traditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">I came from a family that didn\u2019t really have many family traditions, so when I got married, we developed a whole glut of them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s almost ridiculous, but we have a ton of great memories because of it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I am happy to share them with you.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And feel free to copy what interests you, or let them generate other great ideas.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just make sure to have fun with your families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Book of Mormon Trivia<\/strong>\u2014This was hands down the family favorite game.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Without any preparation at all, grab a laundry basket, ball or rolled up socks, and a Book of Mormon (or other scripture).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ask a question from the scriptures, just make them up as you play the game.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When the child gets the answer right, they are allowed to try for a basket.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>One point for the answer, one point for the basket.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We would often form questions from our recent scripture reading.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When the kids were small the questions were manipulated in such a way the answers were always \u201cJesus Christ\u201d or \u201cNephi\u201d.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We rarely had true competition, because we bent over backwards to get them to give the right answers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The real competition was making the baskets, which again we tended to bend the rules just a tad.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Nephites and Lamanites<\/strong>\u2014This is actually a very bad example of family fun.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was an adaptation of steal the flag where we would hide washcloths in our assigned rooms and the other team would have to sneak it out of that guarded room.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Often a basket of laundry would be laying around, with additional room clutter, which would complicate the playing field.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Someone would often cheat, usually Daddy. Anyway, invariably, someone would end up crying by the end of the evening, so it has become our \u201ctragic\u201d tradition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Gorak<\/strong>\u2014You might remember in the original third Star Wars movie, the Ewoks had a monster of some kind that they called Gorak.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>My husband, by dressing up in all dark clothes, would become the Gorak Monster.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019d turn out all the lights and he would crawl around scaring the kids.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I usually sat on the couch waiting for various children to jump on my lap for protection (my favorite part of the game).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>To signal the onset of the evening game, we would have Gorak Goolash for dinner (this was poor man\u2019s chicken and rice casserole).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It got the kids eating the meal and waiting anxiously for it to get dark enough to play.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Outdoor movie<\/strong>\u2014During the summer, we typically have an outdoor movie on July 4<sup>th<\/sup>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>We set up in front of the garage door and <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>bring out couches, blankets, munchies, the whole bit.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Birthday Bag<\/strong>\u2014After presents are opened, everyone anticipates the birthday bag.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a bag full of silly objects representing personality\/unique traits the birthday person has; for example:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>my son is tall and skinny, so I found a long Pixie Stix.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>My husband is sort of losing his hair, so I collected a \u201cbag-o-hair\u201d from a recent haircut.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>My daughters like to sing and play the piano, so they often got a musical type item or sheet music.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was always a crown of some kind in the bag and loads of candybars, such as:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYou are worth \u2018100,000 grand\u2019, \u201cYou \u2018Score\u2019 big with us\u201d, \u201cYou are Bursting with Star power\u201d.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>You get the idea. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>And clearly, anything was fair game as long as it was funny and\/or positive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Morning Scripture Reading<\/strong>\u2014This has certainly been a tradition in our family from way back, but I don\u2019t know how successful we\u2019ve been.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The kids would drag themselves out of bed and pretty much sleep the whole time.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They would wake up in time to read their scripture, then fall back to sleep.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We kept holding it though.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">General Conference Weekend<\/strong>\u2014This was party weekend at the Tolman house.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I cooked up a storm.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We always had our General Conference Breakfast in the morning, played Bingo (where you match subjects from the talks given to pictures on your playing card) with cereal, m&amp;ms, marshmallows, etc., lunch in between sessions, more candy, dinner and dessert.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was a 48 hour eating binge.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We have simplified this routine in a lot of ways now, and mostly just enjoy listening to the words of our leaders&#8212;with fewer and healthier meals and just a little bit of candy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">Holidays<\/strong>\u2014are for family.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>No friends, no work (including housework, thank goodness).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lot\u2019s of food and games.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We also love to watch movies together.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;
