When people ask you how you\u2019re doing and what you\u2019ve been doing lately, what is your pat answer?\u00a0 Let me know if this sounds familiar:\u00a0 \u201cOh, I\u2019ve been busy doing stuff; I\u2019m involved in this, and this, and this, and this, and I just never have any time anymore!\u201d\u00a0 We are a busy bunch of people; always hurrying around, but here\u2019s the question:\u00a0 what are we accomplishing of value?<\/p>\n
Elder L. Tom Perry\u2019s talk, this past Conference, called \u201cLet Him Do It With Simplicity\u201d, is a wonderful guide for us, and causes great meditative thoughts to surface\u2026that is if you take the time to ponder them.<\/p>\n
The basis for his talk is four areas of importance that everyone must consider in life:\u00a0 food, clothing, shelter, and fuel.\u00a0 Elder Perry takes each one in a different direction, however.\u00a0 In order for us to understand what he is REALLY saying, we need to switch gears a little bit, and open our hearts and minds enough to ponder and meditate and ultimately accept these ideas.<\/p>\n
FOOD<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0 He focuses on the Word of Wisdom.\u00a0 How many of us are overweight?\u00a0 How many of us go to bed late, and get up late?\u00a0 How about that awful word: exercise??\u00a0 Are we still battling the saga of caffeinated drinks: Coke, Monster, teas, etc?<\/p>\n
CLOTHING:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 There are fancy clothes that tend to be uncomfortable to wear, but boy, do I look great in them!\u00a0 Then there are grungy clothes that we throw on and hope we don\u2019t see anyone we know\u2026and we usually do.\u00a0 Modesty has nothing to do with dull and boring.\u00a0 Modesty is about respect, decency, and how you view yourself before the Lord.\u00a0 Not only should our clothing be modest; our attitude, and our viewpoints should be modest.\u00a0 Clothes really do express our personalities and attitudes.\u00a0 Have you ever looked at your wardrobe to see how you are portraying yourself in public?\u00a0 Does it say who you really are?<\/p>\n
SHELTER:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Everyone needs a place to live, but there is a wide variance as to what is MODEST and needful.\u00a0 And what about everything needed to fill the space we live in?\u00a0 What about the cars parked in front of the abode?\u00a0 The question isn\u2019t what do you deserve or even need.\u00a0 The question should be what will keep you focused on the more important things of life.<\/p>\n
FUEL:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Elder Perry focuses on spiritual fuel.\u00a0 Are we feeding our souls enough?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Well, isn\u2019t that the real question in all of this?\u00a0 How much of the world have we allowed to steal away our time, interests, and money?
\nI don\u2019t need to point fingers anywhere, except toward a mirror maybe.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t easy to turn from the world and it isn\u2019t always easy to obey perfectly.\u00a0 But the prophets have spoken, and it is up to us to listen.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t mind, let me just express some thoughts that I have pondered.<\/p>\nLife is full of wonderful things, too many things, for one person to thoroughly enjoy in one lifetime.\u00a0 We must learn to be selective with the things that are right for us, personally.\u00a0 We cannot expect to have what our neighbor has.\u00a0 We cannot have it all.\u00a0 We should reach our full potential only with the guidelines the Lord has reserved for us.<\/p>\n
And the Lord has reserved wonderful things for each one of us to enjoy, on a personal level, because He wants us to be happy, on this world, as well as the world to come.<\/p>\n
As we look at the four areas Elder Perry touches on (and forego the minutiae that clutters these areas), we will have the time, and common sense, to see what the Lord has given us.\u00a0 Each one of our needs will be different.\u00a0 But each area will define us, fulfill us, and bring us closer to our Father in Heaven, whom we long to please.\u00a0 And by pleasing Him, we please ourselves.<\/p>\n
Sometimes, when I\u2019m frustrated because I don\u2019t have time for ME, the thought enters my mind:\u00a0 Jesus Christ never had any hobbies.\u00a0 His life was to fulfill the Will of the Father, and his mission was focused from beginning to end.\u00a0 Heavenly Father doesn\u2019t require that from us, but He does ask for something.\u00a0 By foregoing our \u201cselfish\u201d desires and offering more obedience in the guidelines the Lord has set, we will, very simply, have more time to ponder and recognize the important things in life, and relish the happiness they bring.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
