{"id":5685,"date":"2012-06-18T22:04:51","date_gmt":"2012-06-19T04:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/?p=5685"},"modified":"2016-02-15T12:30:38","modified_gmt":"2016-02-15T18:30:38","slug":"family-history-detectives-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/18\/family-history-detectives-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Family History Detectives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For years I have wanted to take a Family History Vacation.<\/p>\n<p>The definition of a Family History Vacation is to visit where your ancestors came from and see what they may have left behind.<\/p>\n<p>We recently returned from a very rewarding trip. We didn\u2019t find much in the way of concrete evidence, but there is something very exciting about walking the streets of place names you have only seen on a piece of paper, knowing that\u2019s where your ancestors walked (my husband\u2019s in this case). Many of them can give you specific help for your area. Most people are happy to help you if you are specific in your request.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare your family group sheets. Add all information and notes to each family. It\u2019s hard to keep all the families straight when you\u2019re out in the field: color-code them.<\/li>\n<li>Plan your itinerary: Specific enough to get to the places you need to get to, but flexible enough in case you run into something fantastic!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here are a few tips when you are there:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use the GPS on your phoneto find even the most obscure places.<\/li>\n<li>Have sunscreen and mosquito repellant if you plan to traipse through cemeteries.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of writing down found information from cemeteries or books, just take a picture of it. Be sure to take a picture of the front of the book and church name too.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid to stop at local museums. Or just stop and ask an older person, working in their yard, if they happen to know anything about their town\u2019s history.<\/li>\n<li>Check the phonebook for the surnames you\u2019re searching for and give someone a call. Make friends, make connections, create future correspondences.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here are a few tips for when you get home:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Organize all your information when you get home&#8211;before you forget.<\/li>\n<li>Email thank yous to maintain your new friendships.<\/li>\n<li>Write down your experiences: the spirit you felt, chance meetings, miracles, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Share your information online at FamilySearch.<\/li>\n<li>Thank the Lord for this experience and new information.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WP-grave1-e1428726668671.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7690\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WP-grave1-e1428726668671-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"WP-grave\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Family vacations can be very rewarding and satisfying.
