Hinckley, and her no-nonsense way of saying things.\u00a0 I miss her. Back in 1999, in the Marriott Center,\u00a0the three wives of the First Presidency\u00a0and their oldest daughters\u00a0shared stories about their lives. I have never laughed so much to hear Sis. Hinckley read off of a bunch of index cards. The following video shows the entire hour-long session, which includes Sister Ruth Faust and Sister Francis Monson, interviewed by their daughters. It wouldn\u2019t be worth the hassle; really it wouldn\u2019t. If it weren\u2019t for the gospel we just couldn\u2019t face it. There is so much of hardness to face that if it weren\u2019t for the gospel I don\u2019t know what would become of us. The gospel\u2019s true. I\u2019ve seen too much and experienced too much in my life to ever deny it. Everyone needs the gospel.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">From a letter she wrote a granddaughter:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cWe gather that these are rather stressful days for you, but even this will pass away and the lessons learned will be a future blessing.\u00a0 There are some years in our lives that we would not want to live again.\u00a0 \u2018Be patient in afflictions, for thou shalt have many; but endure them, for, lo, I am with thee, even unto the end of thy days.\u2019\u00a0 (D&amp;C 24:8) \u00a0End of sermon. You are loved.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Speaking to an audience:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cWe are His children, and if we ever got that through our heads thoroughly, understood that completely, we would never do a small thing, we would never say a <\/em>cross word<em>, we would not use bad language, we would not criticize anybody, we would love everyone the way the Savior loves us.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Writing a letter home:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cWednesday we went to a department store\u2014the finest in Tokyo.\u00a0 We spent 3 hours there.\u00a0 It sort of makes ZCMI look pitiful!\u00a0 We ate lunch in the store, which was an experience in and of itself.\u00a0 They were serving about 1,000 people at once, and there was no such thing as getting a fork or spoon, so I had to manage with the chopsticks.\u00a0 I made it to the bitter end\u00a0but found I had an audience.\u00a0 But I am getting used to that now.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The wisdom of a grandmother:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cWhat is with this boy thing with your girl?\u00a0 Utterly disgusting at the 6th-grade level.\u00a0 Maybe you had better paint some freckles on her face and black out a front tooth.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The voice of a prophet&#8217;s wife:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cThere is something about spirituality that is central to the life of a woman.\u00a0 I do not mean the kind of spirituality that only takes you to church on Sunday.\u00a0 Sitting in <\/em>church<em> will not necessarily make you into a Christian <\/em>anymore<em> than sitting in a garage will make you into a car.\u00a0 I am talking about the kind of spirituality that makes you behave like a child of God.\u00a0 I am talking about the kind of spirituality that breathes reverence into every act and deed.\u00a0 I am talking about the spirituality that makes you loving and grateful, and forgiving, and patient, and gentle, and long-suffering.\u00a0 I am talking about the kind of spirituality that compels you to get in touch with your Heavenly Father every single day of your life.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Speaking to women:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cLife is what happens to you while you are making other plans.\u00a0 This is a time of great opportunity for you to build the kingdom.\u00a0 When you teach children to love their Heavenly Father, you have done one of the greatest things you will ever do.\u00a0 If you can be a full-time homemaker, be grateful.\u00a0 If not, you must do what is best for you.\u00a0 I for one have never felt a need to apologize for my role as a full-time homemaker.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She was always very real:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cAnd now to my peers.\u00a0 On my seventieth birthday, I repeated to myself all day long something I heard Stephen L. Richards\u2019 wife say when she was in her nineties.\u00a0 She said, \u2018Oh, to be seventy again! You can do anything when you are seventy.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A letter to children back home:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cThis is a very different trip for us.\u00a0 Dad has no responsibilities and goes around in grey slacks, blue shirts, and blue blazer.\u00a0 I scarcely know him.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A thank you note to a grandchild:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cThis was a letter to warm my heart.\u00a0 This was a letter to make any rough roads we might have traveled to reach age 77 worth it all.\u00a0 You gave me a Mother\u2019s Day supreme.\u00a0 A wonderful letter and a phone call.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think all of us loved Sis.
