Snow got it right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She was the \u201cPresidentess-Prophetess of the nineteenth century\u201d.\u00a0 For twenty years she captained Utah women \u201cin almost everything pertaining to <\/span>women&#8217;s<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> advancement among her people\u201d.\u00a0 She distrusted \u201cthat class known as \u2018strong minded\u2019 who are strenuously and unflinchingly advocating \u2018woman\u2019s rights\u2019\u201d.\u00a0 She explained, \u201cNot that we are opposed to woman suffrage\u2026But to think of a war of sexes which the woman\u2019s rights movement would inevitably inaugurate,\u2026creates an involuntary shudder!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the Salt Lake Tabernacle, in January 1870, Eliza asked the women, \u201cDo you know of any place on the face of the earth, where <\/span>woman<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> has more liberty, and where she enjoys such high and glorious privileges as she does here, as a Latter-day Saint?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the 1880\u2019s, Mormon women had significant duties and responsibilities inside and outside their homes. \u00a0In 1888, at the International Council of <\/span>Women,<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> held in Washington, D.C., Utah delegates reported that 400 Relief societies in Utah held property valued at $95,000.\u00a0 Many societies owned the halls in which they met.\u00a0 Mormon women published their own <\/span>bi-weekly<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> newspaper titled the Woman\u2019s Exponent.\u00a0 The Relief Society managed a hospital with a woman as a <\/span>resident<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> surgeon.\u00a0 The women of Zion had contributed significantly to the territory\u2019s economy through their participation in silk production and their mercantile cooperatives promoting home manufacture.\u00a0 By the turn of the century, Mormon women were more vocal and involved in politics, economy and welfare services than any other women\u2019s organization in the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As influential as Mormon women were, they understood their place.\u00a0 Feminists attacked a male-dominated society; Eliza defended it.\u00a0 Miss Anthony decried \u201cWoman\u2019s utter dependence on man\u201d; Eliza deemed it essential to woman\u2019s salvation.\u00a0 Mrs. Stanton attacked established religion<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0for placing women in an inferior position; Eliza acknowledged man\u2019s superiority and never ceased to defend it doctrinally.\u00a0 Eliza instructed, \u201cOrder is heaven\u2019s first law and it is utterly impossible for order to exist without \u2026 gradation<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">.\u201d\u00a0 Man and woman cannot occupy the same position.\u00a0 \u201cWe stand in a different position from the ladies of the world; we have made a covenant with God, we understand his order, and know that that order requires submission on the part of women.\u201d\u00a0 With this knowledge, they were honoring God by honoring his priesthood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Eliza, and her Relief Society <\/span>sisters,<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> did not consider themselves slaves by any means; they were stewards.\u00a0 As in the parable of the talents, they were stewards in the act of doubling what they had been given.\u00a0 Stewards relieve their masters of certain tasks and in that process make decisions of consequence.\u00a0 Women often narrow their own field by emphasizing the drudgery of life.\u00a0 Eliza expounded, \u201cDo we realize our responsibilities?\u00a0 And that we have as much to do with the salvation of our souls as the brethren?\u00a0 They cannot save us, we must save ourselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Eliza R. Snow told the Brigham City Relief Society, \u201cSometimes I think we can do more than the brethren.\u201d\u00a0 It was the women who initiated all of the welfare programs in the valley.\u00a0 The Associations for the various age groups was a brainchild of women.\u00a0 Without taking over, Eliza used subtle means of communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Eliza felt the young men should be organized as the young ladies were.\u00a0 Without dictating this to the leaders of the church, she went a different route.\u00a0 While preparing for a meeting for the young ladies in Lehi, she instructed them to bring their beaux.\u00a0 She later reported the outcome of her objective:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI asked the young men to vote and told them I wanted them to sustain the young ladies in their <\/span>positions; and<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> also if they did not leave off their drinking and tobacco where were the young girls to get husbands?\u00a0 The young men did not wish the young girls to be in advance of them.\u00a0 I heard the next morning that the young men had been after the Bishop to organize them before night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It was Joseph Smith who told the women, in Nauvoo, that they might \u201cprovoke the brethren to good works\u201d.\u00a0Eliza R. Snow stressed that women would benefit if they would obey the priesthood in whatever they tried to accomplish.\u00a0 She was advocating not passivity, but righteous submission.\u00a0 \u201cAs sure as the sisters arise and take hold of the work, the brethren will wake up, because they must be at the head.\u201d\u00a0 If the brethren opposed anything the women were doing, a detailed explanation might be offered.\u00a0 But ultimately, \u201cwe will do as we are directed by the Priesthood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Information <\/span>taken<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> from Battle for the Ballot compiled by Carol Cornwall Madsen<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mormon women still seek their place in society.\u00a0 The world has dominated our direction, pulling us to think a certain way.\u00a0 It is important to understand the Lord\u2019s way.\u00a0 It is my opinion that Eliza R.
