{"id":6658,"date":"2013-03-11T12:26:43","date_gmt":"2013-03-11T18:26:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/?p=6658"},"modified":"2013-03-11T13:35:20","modified_gmt":"2013-03-11T19:35:20","slug":"forgiveness-and-humility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/11\/forgiveness-and-humility\/","title":{"rendered":"Forgiveness and Humility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Which one of us has had a stone lobbed at us, for no apparent good reason, and our feathers became ruffled? Or perhaps we have spoken out of turn only to regret it minutes later? How many \u201cif only\u201d moments have we experienced because we forgot to listen to the calming voice of the Holy Spirit? How do we live non-contentiously when the contentious world lives all around us egging us on to join the fray?<\/p>\n<p>Recently, a hulla-balloo took place because a woman was nursing her baby in a YW meeting and someone complained, which got to the bishop, who released her, and threatened her with taking her temple recommend away if she ever did it again. The true story ended up being quite exaggerated, and the bishop never confronted her, nor did he threaten her. Stories like this often stir the pot of indignation and get us all riled up until we typically discover more of the facts, later on, and realize someone over-reacted, and it could have been easily resolved in a more Christ-like way. Unfortunately, hindsight is always better than foresight.<\/p>\n<p>This post is not about breastfeeding. I believe it is a personal matter, and one that should be left to the mother to decide without any judgment on anyone else&#8217;s part. However, I felt these words pour out of me because my initial reaction was that IF the bishop had confronted her, she needed to take it to the Lord, not the Internet. I have had to deal with hurt feelings from men and women who should have known better but were my leaders, and this is what I have learned is the best way to deal with it. Remember, Satan likes to ride upon our emotions and stir our feelings into a mighty whirlwind and then we end up getting our panties in a twist (I&#8217;m sorry. I love that little saying and just had to throw it in!).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2><span style=\"line-height: 12.997159004211426px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Prayer will bring the Holy Ghost immediately to our rescue&#8211;assuming we have allowed ourselves to seek his guidance often.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><i><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/woman-praying.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6691\" alt=\"woman praying\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/woman-praying-150x150.jpeg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Hurt feelings and instant retaliation is an epidemic in our society. In Church, it is those with weak testimonies who fall by the wayside.\u00a0Pray that you may humbly accept what you can\u2019t control around you and still remain faithful to Jesus Christ.\u00a0Pres. Thomas S. Monson told us this in conference a few years back:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>\u201cOne human resource officer assigned to handle petty grievances concluded an unusually hectic day by placing facetiously a little sign on his desk for those with unsolved problems. It read, \u201cHave you tried prayer?\u201d What he may not have realized was that this simple counsel would solve more problems, alleviate more suffering, prevent more transgression, and bring about greater peace and contentment in the human soul than could be obtained in any other way.\u201d\u00a0 (Come unto Him in Prayer and Faith, Ensign, May 2009).<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 19px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Keep eternity in view.<\/span><\/strong><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; color: #ff6600;\">\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Worldly issues of impending doom can catch hold upon our temporal thoughts and bring us down. Caustic glop of <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/bridegroom-cometh.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6431\" alt=\"bridegroom cometh\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/bridegroom-cometh-150x150.jpeg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>despair, envy, revenge, and regret tend to clog the pores of our soul. Even an overabundance of good choices can overpower better disciplines. By keeping an eternal perspective we can look up and look toward our Savior who has overcome the world. You may remember what Pres. Dieter F. Uchtdorf said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>\u201cHow\u00a0can we tell the difference for our own situation? We can ask ourselves, \u2018Am I committing my time and energies to the things that matter most?\u2019 There are so many good things to do, but we can\u2019t do all of them. Our Heavenly Father is most pleased when we sacrifice something good for something far greater with an eternal perspective. Sometimes, that may even mean nurturing small but beautiful forget-me-not flowers instead of a large garden of exotic blooms.\u201d (Forget Me Not, Ensign, Nov 2011)\u00a0<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/A-virtuous-woman.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3091\" alt=\"A virtuous woman\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/A-virtuous-woman-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/A-virtuous-woman.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/A-virtuous-woman.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/A-virtuous-woman.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b style=\"font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 19px;\">Take time to quietly ponder, accepting God\u2019s will before our own.<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Immediate reactions generally get us into trouble. Breathing deeply, even letting seconds, hours, days go by, can help us navigate our \u201cnatural\u201d feelings and allow us to see how God might handle this dilemma. Listen to these wise words from Elder Quentin L. Cook.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>\u201cHow we relate and interact with each other is a measure of our willingness to follow Jesus Christ\u2026We live in a noisy, contentious world, where it is possible to be viewing or listening to information, music, or even pure nonsense virtually every waking hour. If we want to have the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, we must find time to slow down, ponder, pray, and live so we are worthy to receive and act upon\u00a0His promptings. We will avoid major mistakes if we heed His warnings. It is our privilege as members to receive light and knowledge from Him even to the perfect day. (D&amp;C 50:24)\u2026The atoning trials the Savior faced in Gethsemane and on the cross are a great example to us. He faced mental, physical, and spiritual afflictions that are beyond our comprehension. In the garden, He prayed to His Father, saying, \u201cO my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. (Matt. 26:39)\u2026 As His disciples, there will be times when we will be tried and persecuted unjustly and mocked unfairly and face temporal and spiritual storms of a magnitude that will seem unbearable to us and experience bitter cups that we pray would pass from us. No one is exempt from the storms of life. (We Follow Jesus Christ, Ensign, May 2010)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Returned kindness goes a long way.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/kindness.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6693\" alt=\"kindness\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/kindness-150x150.jpeg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Our generation is forgetting to be kind to one another. Acceptance and tolerance are only words, with little sincere action. By remembering who we are, we can represent our Savior at all times and in all places. I don\u2019t think any of us will forget the words and example of Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>\u201cI know this is a delicate and sensitive thing of which I am speaking. There are hardened criminals who may have to be locked up. There are unspeakable crimes, such as deliberate murder and rape that justify harsh penalties. But there are some who could be saved from long, stultifying years in prison because of an unthoughtful, foolish act. Somehow forgiveness, with love and tolerance, accomplishes miracles that can happen in no other way\u2026The great Atonement was the supreme act of forgiveness. The magnitude of that Atonement is beyond our ability to completely understand. I know only that it\u00a0happened, and that it was for me and for you. The suffering was so great, the agony so intense, that none of us can comprehend it when the Savior offered Himself as a ransom for the sins of all mankind\u2026It is through Him that we gain forgiveness\u2026May God help us to be a little kinder, showing forth greater forbearance, to be more forgiving, more willing to walk the second mile, to reach down and lift up those who may have sinned but have brought forth the fruits of repentance, to lay aside old grudges and nurture them no more. (Forgiveness, Ensign, Nov 2005)\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 19px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">As Latter-day Saints, we need to avoid pride like the plague.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Book of Mormon tells us this will be the downfall of church members, if we are not watchful.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/pride.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6694\" alt=\"pride\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/pride-150x150.jpeg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Moroni 9:3-5<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>3. And now behold, my son, I fear lest the Lamanites shall destroy this people; for they do not repent, and Satan stirreth them up continually to anger one with another.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>4. Behold, I am laboring with them continually; and when I speak the word of God with sharpness they tremble and anger against me; and when I use no sharpness they harden their hearts against it; wherefore, I fear lest the Spirit of the Lord hath ceased striving with them.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>5. For so exceedingly do they anger that it seemeth me that they have no fear of death; and they have lost their love, one towards another; and they athirst after blood and revenge continually.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Satan is fighting dirty and we must not get caught up in the things of life. He will stir us up to feel hurt, anger, resentment, and hopelessness. Only through the Savior can we rise above these emotions and accept His way. We need to trust that He will make all things right, if we allow Him to be the judge, and merciful Savior, that we believe He is.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>John 14:6<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (Enjoy the entire chapter while you\u2019re at it.)<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are those who take issues to the extreme, in the name of righteous indignation, and fall into the well-oiled trap of Satan.
