{"id":701,"date":"2009-04-06T21:35:36","date_gmt":"2009-04-07T03:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=701"},"modified":"2023-08-31T20:34:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T02:34:16","slug":"emily-hill-mills-woodmansee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/06\/emily-hill-mills-woodmansee\/","title":{"rendered":"Emily Hill Mills Woodmansee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Emily Hill Mills Woodmansee is the author of our beloved hymn, &#8220;As Sisters in Zion&#8221; (#309).\u00a0 In her autobiography, she uses the words from a poet, saying, \u201cI never knew what trouble was, till I became a Mormon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She was the youngest of eleven children, born in England in 1836, to good parents who would never accept the gospel.\u00a0 She heard of this new religion, at the age of twelve, through her cousin, who urged her to listen to them at meeting.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0Her older sister, Julia, was the only one in her family to join the church, although they were forced to wait till they were older before finally receiving permission to be baptized from their parents.\u00a0 When they were 20 and 23 years of age (respectively), they set out to join the Saints, joining the company led by James G. Willie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">During their ill-fated journey, they traveled together through blizzards, unprepared in their lightweight clothing. It was at Rocky Ridge where her sister, Julia, collapsed, unable to go any farther. Emily, knowing her sister might die, picked her sister up and helped her to the relative safe haven of their handcart. Thirteen others died that night, but both girls survived.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Emily happily entered into plural marriage with Dr. William G. Mills. It\u2019s not clear whether she had her own baby, or raised one of his children as her own, but he asked Brigham Young to serve a mission to England and decided not to return to his families.\u00a0 She was abandoned and her home was even foreclosed on her. But she survived.\u00a0 During all this time she wrote poetry, documenting her feelings experienced during these trying events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She married Joseph Woodmansee, had eight more children, and supported women\u2019s suffrage while writing poems that were turned into hymns.\u00a0 When finances turned sour, Emily began working in Real Estate, discovering she had a mind for business. She was appointed Treasurer of the Woman\u2019s Cooperative Store, which position she held for ten years. Many of her poems were published during this time. As well, she won the gold medal for the Sunday School Jubilee Poem. She died in 1906.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It&#8217;s the beloved hymn, \u201cAs Sisters in Zion,\u201d we remember her by. She wrote this poem late in life culminating all she felt and all she had experienced. The words follow:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>As sisters in Zion, we\u2019ll all work together;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>The blessings of God on our labors we\u2019ll seek.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>We\u2019ll build up his kingdom with earnest endeavor;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>We\u2019ll comfort the weary and strengthen the weak.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>The errand of angels is given to women;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>And this is a gift that, as sisters, we claim:<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>To do whatsoever is gentle and human,<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>To cheer and to bless in humanity\u2019s name.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>How vast is our purpose, how broad is our mission,<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>If we but fulfill it in spirit and deed.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Oh, naught but the Spirit\u2019s <\/em>divinest<em> tuition<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Can give us the wisdom to truly succeed.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>We\u2019ll turn from our follies, our <\/em>pride<em> and our weakness,<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>The vain, foolish fashions of Babel despise;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>We\u2019ll seek for the garments of truth and of meekness,<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>And learn to be useful and happy and wise.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>We\u2019ll wear what is sensible, neat and becoming<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>The daughters of Zion&#8212;the angels of light;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>We\u2019ll work with a will, while the angels are scanning<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Our aims and our actions from morning till night.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">From her autobiography, she states, \u201cOf my children I need say but little, but I fervently hope that each and all of them may seek and obtain for themselves a knowledge of the truth, for I know it can make them wise unto salvation, and may they be willing if needs be to endure reproach and privation for principle\u2019s sake.\u00a0 I doubt not that all my troubles have been for my good, and today I am more than thankful for my standing in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Information from:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Emily Hill Mills Woodmansee Autobiography, transcribed by W.
