Wells wrote an article in the Women\u2019s Exponent lamenting this very topic (Jan 1879).\u00a0 She added a list of impolite things to watch for as well.\u00a0 Think about your own philosophy and experience.\u00a0 Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>THE MANNERS OF THE AGES<\/p>\n<p>Mothers, teachers, editors, writers can all materially aid in improving the manners of the age.\u00a0 Fathers are not exempt either, but as a mother\u2019s influence on the mind and the character of a child is almost always greater than that of the father, so it would be in the case of manners and good breeding.\u00a0 Women tolerate and sanction too many rudenesses on the part of men.\u00a0Before these improprieties and liberties can be remedied somebody must strongly and emphatically declare themselves against them, and set their faces like iron to do battle for a higher state of society and its usages.<\/p>\n<p>A LIST OF IMPOLITE THINGS<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Loud and boisterous laughing<\/li>\n<li>Reading when others are talking or visa versa<\/li>\n<li>Cutting fingernails in company<\/li>\n<li>Leaving a stranger without a seat<\/li>\n<li>Spitting about the house, smoking or chewing<\/li>\n<li>Leaving church before worship is closed<\/li>\n<li>Whispering or laughing in the house of God<\/li>\n<li>Correcting older persons than yourself, especially your parents<\/li>\n<li>Not listening to what one is saying in company<\/li>\n<li>Commencing to eat upon reaching the table<\/li>\n<li>Answering questions put to someone else<\/li>\n<li>Commencing talking before others have finished speaking<\/li>\n<li>Laughing at the mistakes of others<\/li>\n<li>Receiving a present without an expression of gratitude<\/li>\n<li>Not greeting someone you pass along the way<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s true, that this falls under the realm of mothering and training.\u00a0 Where everyone is responsible to set a good example, it is the mother who sets the standard.\u00a0 We live in a casual society.\u00a0 When mothers became occupied with other interests and necessities, the training lost its importance and society has suffered as a result.\u00a0 It\u2019s an uncomfortable thing to say, but mothers have dropped the ball.\u00a0 Instead of women supporting one another during the tough times, we have all relaxed our standards and life now is hard for everyone.\u00a0 However, I believe it is never too late.\u00a0 Sisters can band together, regroup, raise the bar.\u00a0 And with great patience, love, and support we can pull back the reins and teach and train as the Lord himself taught.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are there any good manners left in our society?\u00a0 What happened to Thank You notes, RSVPs, sincere apologies?\u00a0 Is the customer ever right, anymore?\u00a0 Is graciousness old fashioned?\u00a0 Do our young people know how to conduct themselves in a formal situation?
