At dinnertime, my husband would announce, \u201cLet\u2019s play Nephites and Lamanites tonight!\u201d and a whoop would rise to the rafters while I would silently moan unnoticed and ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The family would divide into two teams. It wasn\u2019t about being on the\u00a0<i>good<\/i>\u00a0team or the\u00a0<i>bad <\/i>team <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">because both teams had to be sneaky, cunning, and daring. After hiding a washcloth somewhere in their territory (living room or family room), the objective was to send scouts out to find the other team\u2019s washcloth while guards stayed back to protect their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There were two serious problems with this well-loved game:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The house was rarely clean enough to recognize what constituted a\u00a0good hiding place.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Without fail, someone would get hurt and end up crying, which usually ended the game.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Because I was always outvoted by four boys, plus one adult boy, (the girls just went along with it), I created a unique role for myself. The kitchen and hallway (each situated between the family room and living room) were neutral zones where both teams could pass without getting tagged. This is where I roamed, waiting for the inevitable hurt child who needed comfort before jumping back into the fray. Eventually, someone would end up getting really hurt, and we knew it was time to quit the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">So, why do I share this ugly picture of our deranged family? Woman\u2019s place is extremely important in the household. She is the ever-present entity in the neutral zone, waiting with open arms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/2014\/07\/14\/mothers-of-influence\/dalton\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9026\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9026\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dalton-300x169.jpg?resize=407%2C229\" alt=\"\" width=\"407\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dalton.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dalton.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dalton.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dalton.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Sis. Elaine S. Dalton once spoke on the topic &#8220;<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/2013\/04\/we-are-daughters-of-our-heavenly-father?lang=eng\">We are Daughters of Our Heavenly Father.<\/a>&#8220;<\/span><i>\u00a0<\/i>She reminded us \u201cwho we are and whose we are\u201d and how we should \u201cact well thy part.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For women, to have influence is a power all its own. The world minimizes our role as nurturers, but we all have seen the toll family life has taken as women forget the influence they have over their children and seek to fulfill their own desires. For those women who raise their children with consistent loving boundaries, know that the blessings of heaven are at your fingertips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">When speaking of her mother, Sis. Dalton said,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><i>&#8220;She kept her covenants, and because she did, she called down the powers of heaven to bless our home and to send miracles. She relied on the power of prayer, priesthood, and covenant promises. She was faithful in her service to the Lord. Her steadfast devotion steadied us, her children\u2026She understood what it meant to be a covenant keeper.&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This reminds me of the people of Ammon, formerly Lamanites, who buried their weapons of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/2014\/07\/14\/mothers-of-influence\/anti-nephi-lehies-bury-weapons-39657-print\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9027\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9027\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/anti-nephi-lehies-bury-weapons-39657-print-232x300.jpg?resize=232%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/anti-nephi-lehies-bury-weapons-39657-print.jpg?resize=232%2C300&amp;ssl=1 232w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/anti-nephi-lehies-bury-weapons-39657-print.jpg?resize=768%2C993&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/anti-nephi-lehies-bury-weapons-39657-print.jpg?resize=792%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 792w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/anti-nephi-lehies-bury-weapons-39657-print.jpg?w=928&amp;ssl=1 928w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/a>war, covenanting with the Lord that they would forever hold to peace and righteousness, which they did. And they diligently taught it to the next generation.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><i>&#8220;Yea, and they did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness; yea, and even according to their faith it was done unto them; and I did remember the words which they said unto me that their mothers had taught them.&#8221; (Alma\u00a0 57:21)<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It takes a concentrated effort on a mother\u2019s part to teach consistently the ways of the Lord. A child needs his\/her hand held for the first several years, and once they are grown and successful, it is Mother they thank, and are beholden to, for that valiant start in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Brigham Young spoke volumes about the role of men and women. He said,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><i>&#8220;The men are the lords of the earth, and they are more inclined to reject the Gospel than the women. The women are a great deal more inclined to believe the truth than the men; they comprehend it more quickly, and they are submissive and easy to teach\u2026&#8221; (JD 14:120)<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">(And don&#8217;t freak out over the word &#8220;submissive.&#8221; This is a Christ-like attribute we must all learn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">My husband enjoys finding gospel truth in the Hebrew language. The following is one of his discoveries:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The words\u00a0<b>KING<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>QUEEN,<\/b>\u00a0in Hebrew, are almost the same and look like this respectively:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/King-Queen.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7371\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/King-Queen.jpg?resize=502%2C252\" alt=\"King Queen\" width=\"502\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/King-Queen.jpg?w=502&amp;ssl=1 502w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/King-Queen.jpg?resize=300%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Sis. Dalton reminds us,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><i>&#8220;Young women need women and men to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places. Never before has this been more important than now. Young women need mothers and mentors who exemplify virtuous womanhood. Mothers, your relationship with your daughter is of paramount importance, and so is your example. How you love and honor her father, his priesthood, and his divine role will be reflected and perhaps amplified in your daughter\u2019s attitudes and behavior.&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">May we not get caught up in the rationalizations of the day. The role of a father and mother are God-given, holy, and essentially different from one another. How can we possibly deny the priesthood holder his right and duty to guide and direct the family toward righteousness, and the nurturing influence of a mother\u2019s love? And let <em>righteousness<\/em> be the word we live by.<i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">J. Reuben Clark stated,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><i>And then the priesthood will wish to proclaim their debt to these their helpmeets without whom the priesthood could not have worked out their destiny. And the priesthood shall bow in reverence and love unbounded before these mothers who did the service the priesthood could not do, and thank and praise them for bearing their children\u2026 (J. Reuben Clark, Relief Society Magazine, 33:804)<\/i><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Our role, as a woman, a wife, and a mother is often taken for granted, but Heavenly Father watches over his daughters. He is always there to strengthen us and encourage us to fight for light and truth, teach the pure doctrines of the Lord, and hold the whimpering child. And like Sis. Dalton, I too hope to \u201creturn to live with Him\u2014proven, pure, and sealed in an eternal family. [We] shall ever praise Him for the privilege of being a woman, a wife, and a mother.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><em>How do you personally stand as a witness of grand womanhood?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When our children were young, we used to play a made-up game for FHE.
