{"id":756,"date":"2009-04-30T12:46:13","date_gmt":"2009-04-30T18:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=756"},"modified":"2019-01-20T21:21:34","modified_gmt":"2019-01-21T03:21:34","slug":"emmas-hymns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/30\/emmas-hymns\/","title":{"rendered":"Emma&#8217;s Hymns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Joseph asked Emma to collect hymns to be used at worship services almost immediately after the organization of the church.\u00a0 Emma spent the next five years compiling what would become a collection of ninety hymns.\u00a0 She was careful in her selection and took time to pick and organize the best.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">William W. Phelps helped her as he wrote some new poems to be used, adapted other text, making them doctrinally correct, and prepared the book for publication.\u00a0 Thirty-nine of the hymns were written by LDS poets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The hymnbook was finally published in 1836, measuring approximately 3 x 4 inches.\u00a0 Only the text was published.\u00a0 Tunes were borrowed from other churches, as well as folk tunes, well known during the time period.\u00a0 These tunes could be selected at random by the person leading the congregation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Today, our hymnbooks have the text and music together and we typically only sing one tune with each text.\u00a0 Back in the days of the early church, various tunes could be sung to the same text.\u00a0 Each tune had its own name and was easily identified.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the back of our hymnbook, you will see a section on Meters. \u00a0This is where you can play around with some of the tune options.\u00a0 For example, it could be interesting to sing Away in a <\/span>Manger<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> to the tune of More Holiness Give Me, or The Spirit of God to the tune of Now Let Us Rejoice, or visa <\/span>versa<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">.\u00a0 I have found by doing this, different words will be emphasized and a new meaning will emerge in the singing of these hymns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Since Emma\u2019s little hymnbook, there have been eight hymnbooks published with various selections included. Twenty-five of Emma\u2019s original hymns <\/span>are<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> in our present-day hymnbook.\u00a0 The tunes have been modified over the years.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The hymnbook is mainly for the use of the congregation.\u00a0 The music is simple with typically four-part harmony.\u00a0 However, this form of composition is more complicated than in earlier days where everyone sang the same tune, with possibly a simple harmony added by musical people.\u00a0 Choir numbers have been added to past hymnbooks, where the music was much more elaborate than typical congregational singing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Today, we have been asked to sing congregational and choir hymns straight from the hymnbook.\u00a0 These hymns can be beautifully sung, and simply rendered, as they are.\u00a0 But within the pages of the hymnbook, \u00a0the variety is endless as we can mix various text with various tunes, \u00a0change tempos, etc.\u00a0 Nowadays, many hymns are not sung because they are new, or forgotten.\u00a0 We sometimes rely on the more familiar hymns singing one or two verses and ignoring the additional verses added at the bottom of the page.\u00a0\u00a0 There is much variety of beauty and gospel learning that is available in our hymnbooks, if we but study and experiment a little more with what we have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">How grateful we are to Emma\u2019s organization, her love of music, and her research to get the best.\u00a0 And how we ought to thank those authors and composers who bring the Spirit to our tongues as we sing the songs of Zion.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joseph asked Emma to collect hymns to be used at worship services almost immediately after the organization of the church.\u00a0 Emma spent the next five years compiling what would become a collection of ninety hymns.\u00a0 She was careful in her selection and took time to pick and organize the best.\u00a0 \u00a0 William W.
