It was never a church publication.\u00a0 Women used this newspaper as a forum to teach, motivate, and advertise to the local women such gatherings as Woman\u2019s Suffrage, Relief Society Meetings, Valley-wide projects like wheat information, and medical classes.\u00a0In its 50 year run, it has been the receptacle for an incredible feast for genealogy and history buffs with its thousands of life histories, obituaries, and recorded events.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1651\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/Womans-Exponent.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1651\" title=\"Woman's Exponent\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/Womans-Exponent-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/Womans-Exponent.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/Womans-Exponent.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/Womans-Exponent.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Woman&#8217;s Exponent<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was roughly an eight-page newsletter that came out twice a month,\u00a0carrying factoids from other national newspapers as well as local stories of interest. Poetry, household hints, and reports of various Relief Society Conferences would cover its pages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It began publication in 1872 with Louisa Lula Greene (a niece of Brigham Young) as the first editor.\u00a0 Emmeline B. Wells became the second and last editor for the next thirty-nine years. Literally her baby, within its pages, she became known as the beloved \u201cAunt Em.\u201d It would end its long run when Emmeline was called as the fifth General Relief Society President, and the church decided to start a new publication of its own.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under Emmeline\u2019s editorship, the Woman&#8217;s Exponent became a well known platform for the female voice as Mormon women desired women\u2019s rights and woman suffrage. At one time, it was remarked that the newspaper\u00a0\u201cnow wields more real power in our politics than all of the newspapers in Utah put together.\u201d Emmeline gave it the subtitle, &#8220;The Organ of the Relief Society.&#8221; The Woman&#8217;s Exponent was published until 1914, when the Relief Society Bulletin and Relief Society Magazine replaced it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Woman\u2019s Exponent was started in the Salt Lake Valley.\u00a0 In the 19th century, it was one of three newspapers, written by and for women, in the west.
