These are classic scriptures that hold a message of truth that we often forget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/daniel-in-the-lions-den-.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9276\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/daniel-in-the-lions-den--300x232.jpg?resize=300%2C232\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/daniel-in-the-lions-den-.jpg?resize=300%2C232&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/daniel-in-the-lions-den-.jpg?w=464&amp;ssl=1 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you haven\u2019t read all of the accounts of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/topics\/first-vision-accounts?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The First Vision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently. You know, that\u2019s a controversial subject. Some people don\u2019t understand why the different versions add to, or neglect, certain parts of the whole story. So, what do you think?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you ever wondered about a doctrine or principle and, using the Topical Guide, searched out scriptures to understand it\u2019s truth better? And then, did you pray to have a personal witness of what you learned?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scriptures are where truth is found and we desperately need to find truth in our day and age. With so much chaos blowing all around us, it is truth that will stand erect and point the way to Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1978\/04\/what-is-truth?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bishop Vandenberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> talked (in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1978\/04?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April 1978 Sunday morning session <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of conference) about truth. He said, \u201cTruth defined is found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.\u201d We learn about Jesus Christ in the scriptures. We learn who He was, what He did, and how His life affected others. Our study of the scriptures will draw us closer to Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/joseph-reading.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9277\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/joseph-reading-239x300.jpg?resize=239%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/joseph-reading.jpg?resize=239%2C300&amp;ssl=1 239w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/joseph-reading.jpg?resize=768%2C962&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/joseph-reading.jpg?w=798&amp;ssl=1 798w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his talk, he mentioned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/james\/1.5-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James 1:5-7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019ve often wondered what it was in those verses that caused Joseph to ponder for a long time how to get an answer to his question. The other day, in Relief Society, the teacher had us close our eyes and ponder for five minutes on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It was a good exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world, as we know it, doesn\u2019t allow for much pondering. We must purposefully remove ourselves from the world in order to quietly ponder the scriptures where answers of truth will flood our thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the past several years, we have discussed General Conference talks in Priesthood\/Relief Society. This General Conference Odyssey is all about what has been said in our conferences. Next year, we&#8217;ll be studying even more talks given during conference. I love reading these talks and thinking about their messages. But I heard a story recently that made me think twice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A member of our church was visiting with a friend, who happened to be a rabbi. During the discussion, the scriptures came up. When asked what the rabbi thought of the scriptures, he said, \u201cOh, I don\u2019t study the old scriptures, I study what others have said about them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We might view General Conference talks in the same way. We tend to study them <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instead<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the scriptures.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/scriptures.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9278\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/scriptures-300x214.jpg?resize=300%2C214\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/scriptures.jpg?resize=300%2C214&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/scriptures.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> Even though we view these talks as modern-day scripture, we might take another look and note the references used in\u00a0<\/span>each talk. We can see that many talks have a strong reference to the scriptures. As we read the talks we might refer to the scriptures to gain a full understanding of the truths that are being preached.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the scriptures that hold truth, not what people think about them, or try to remember from the old Primary stories of their youth. Next year, as we study the conference messages, I challenge all of us to read through each of the references of the talks given. Most of them lead us to the scriptures where we can see truth as it was originally given. The scriptures aren\u2019t old-fashioned.
