Because I am always interested in Relief Society, I am most interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1978\/10\/good-health-a-key-to-joyous-living?lang=eng\">Sis. Smith\u2019s talk.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Using one of her statements, I modify it only a little: \u201c[Relief Society] affects every facet of our lives\u2014our<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/women-serving-women.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9378\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/women-serving-women-300x169.jpg?resize=300%2C169\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/women-serving-women.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/women-serving-women.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/women-serving-women.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> feeling of personal well-being, our approach to work, our social interactions\u2014even our service to the Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It still baffles me that<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Relief Society leaders think that playing get-to-know-you games helps sisters bond.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Relief Society \u201cfun\u201d activities can possibly compete with \u201cworldly fun.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Reading through my blog, anyone can see how much our Relief Society has done to promote healthy living and production, creating eternal bonds between righteous women. The origins of these accomplishments have been forgotten and taken for granted over the years. What a shame and a loss! <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/daughters-book.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8269\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/daughters-book-300x221.png?resize=300%2C221\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/daughters-book.png?resize=300%2C221&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/daughters-book.png?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>(All can be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/relief-society\/daughters-in-my-kingdom?lang=eng\">Daughters in My Kingdom<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Leaders puzzle over each month as to what to do next to entertain the sisters, from snazzy titles for meetings to the latest craze. No one is better at \u201cworldly fun\u201d than the world, so the Relief Society needs to stop competing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sis. Barbara B. Smith, 10<sup>th<\/sup> Relief Society General President, focuses her talk on what can be accomplished and learned at Relief Society mini classes. Today, we can read in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/handbook\/handbook-2-administering-the-church\/relief-society?lang=eng#9.4.2\">Section 9.4.2<\/a> of Handbook 2:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Additional Relief Society Meetings<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>To supplement the instruction in Sunday meetings, Relief Society sisters may participate in additional meetings\u2014Generally held monthly, but the Relief Society presidency may recommend that they <\/em>be<em> held more often or less often\u2014These may include service, classes, projects, conferences, and workshops. In these meetings, sisters learn and accomplish the charitable and practical responsibilities of the Relief Society. They learn and practice skills that will help them increase their faith and personal righteousness, strengthen their families and make their homes centers of spiritual strength, and help those in need. They learn and apply principles of provident living and spiritual and temporal self-reliance. They also increase in sisterhood and unity as they teach one another and serve together.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">These are things the world will never teach us; in fact, the world just isn\u2019t very good at any of them. We, sisters of the Relief Society, however, are masters. We actually have the knowledge, incentive, and the directive. Didn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/2017\/10\/turn-on-your-light?lang=eng\">Sis. Sharon Eubank<\/a> just call us an injunction?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>The prophets are calling on us, my sisters. Will you be righteous? Will you articulate your faith? Can you bear being distinct and different?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Our Relief Society has to be different from the world. We have to see things through the Lord\u2019s eyes. We have to do His work. We have to be His. That is if we want the blessings of eternity. I think God looks upon His daughters as those who can take part in saving the world through our faithfulness, our charity work, and our diligent care over our families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">May our Relief Society monthly and mini classes reflect who we are and what we are working toward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Further down the same section of Handbook 2, it directs:<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Handbook_2-lg.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6014\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Handbook_2-lg.jpeg?resize=201%2C244\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>In planning these meetings, Relief Society leaders give special attention to topics that the bishop has asked them to address to help meet local needs. Leaders also give <strong>priority<\/strong> to the following topics:<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Marriage and Family<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Homemaking<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Self-reliance and Provident living<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Compassionate Service<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Temple and Family History<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Sharing the Gospel<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Relief Society sisters can take care of the welfare of one another and spread it throughout the world. This is how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1979\/10\/the-role-of-righteous-women?lang=eng\">Pres. Kimball<\/a> envisioned us, \u201cthe women of the Church are seen as distinct and different\u2014in happy ways\u2014from the women of the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On a similar note, recently, the Church has instituted the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/topics\/pef-self-reliance?lang=eng&amp;old=true\">Self-Reliance program<\/a> where members are helping one another, through a council format, how to change their temporal lives for the better. It <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/philippines-relief-society-meetings-1346144-480x250.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9379 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/philippines-relief-society-meetings-1346144-480x250-300x156.jpg?resize=300%2C156\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/philippines-relief-society-meetings-1346144-480x250.jpg?resize=300%2C156&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/philippines-relief-society-meetings-1346144-480x250.jpg?resize=480%2C250&amp;ssl=1 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>occurs to me that every RS president would do well to see how this program works to help her help her sisters more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Our Church is full of change and modification, all in the hopes of making us better people. The gospel is our rock of salvation, even Jesus Christ, who calls upon us to rise above the world, so we can reach back and save the world with our goodness. True charity, God-like love for one another, applies the very welfare of everyone\u2019s hope and salvation.
