{"id":9422,"date":"2018-02-26T20:30:38","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T02:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/?p=9422"},"modified":"2018-02-26T21:55:38","modified_gmt":"2018-02-27T03:55:38","slug":"identifying-myself-as-a-true-saint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2018\/02\/26\/identifying-myself-as-a-true-saint\/","title":{"rendered":"Identifying Myself As a True Saint"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>This is a General Conference Odyssey post for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1979\/04?lang=eng\">April 1979, Saturday afternoon.<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This session taught such doctrine as to make it possible to clearly identify myself<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0as a true Saint. We might all ask ourselves the following questions to see where our heart really lies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do I Accept Russell M. Nelson as the living prophet and spokesman of the Lord, Jesus Christ?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We hear, in General\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Conference a lot, the importance of following the prophet. Is this something we think about in between conferences? What does it mean to follow the prophet? What can it mean to us when we actually do what he asks us to do? Why is<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/prophets-temple.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7769\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/prophets-temple-300x240.jpeg?resize=300%2C240\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/prophets-temple.jpeg?resize=300%2C240&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/prophets-temple.jpeg?w=460&amp;ssl=1 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> accepting President\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Nelson as our prophet so important?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Identifying myself as a true Saint means that I will remember what the prophet has asked me to do, and \u201cdo it.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/2017\/04\/the-power-of-the-book-of-mormon?lang=eng\">Pres. Monson\u2019s final words<\/a> to us were to read the Book of Mormon and to be kind to everyone. Pres. Nelson has spoken much about keeping the family strong, both here on earth as well as providing saving ordinances to those in the Spirit World.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As confirmed in Mark E. Petersen\u2019s talk, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1979\/04\/signs-of-the-true-church?lang=eng\">\u201cSigns of the True Church,\u201d<\/a> I am a true Saint because I believe in modern revelation revealed by a living prophet, as well as additional revealed scripture. These are two hallmarks of the LDS church, and I choose to align myself with this belief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do I Labor to Live by the Spirit?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The key word is \u201clabor.\u201d It isn\u2019t easy to live by the spirit and it takes consistent practice, especially needed in difficult circumstances. Howard W. Hunter quoted President Woodruff in his talk, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1979\/04\/developing-spirituality?lang=eng\">\u201cDeveloping Spirituality.\u201d<\/a> It is important to note that these words were printed in the newspaper!<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c\u2026This is the Spirit that we must have to carry out the purposes of God on the earth. We need that more than any other gift. \u2026 We are in the midst of enemies, in the midst of darkness and temptation, and we need to be guided by the spirit of God\u201d (Deseret Weekly, 1896).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Can you imagine reading this in the newspaper today? How would it be received? Why do you think some people would have such a hard time with this advice?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Elder Hunter admits it is difficult to develop spirituality. \u201cIt takes time and frequently involves a struggle. \u2026 is accomplished only through deliberate effort and by calling upon God and keeping his commandments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Identifying myself as a true Saint means I will labor toward the struggle of feeling\u2014daily\u2014the Holy Ghost, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">because I know that I need His guidance every day to recognize good from evil, staying focused enough to carry out the purposes of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do I Realize and Perform the Labor Intended to Seal My Family in the House of the Lord?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At the opening of this last and final dispensation, Moroni came to visit Joseph Smith four times with the same message (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/pgp\/js-h\/1.30-50?lang=eng\">JS-H 1:30-50<\/a>). This message is the focus of our church today: to spread the gospel across the earth, as well as the Spirit World, in order to link everyone into a giant chain that will one day be presented to the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">An overwhelming, but glorious, work of performance by a true Saint, to be sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do I Claim Jesus Christ as My Savior?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This question can simply be answered in testimony through word and action. Hartman Rector, Jr. gave us some thoughtful questions in his talk, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1979\/04\/following-christ-to-victory?lang=eng\">\u201cFollowing Christ to Victory\u201d:<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do I believe I am worthy of the Lord\u2019s blessings?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do I look to Him first for those blessings?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7779\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7779\" style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/thoughtsjulierogers.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7779\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/thoughtsjulierogers-228x300.jpg?resize=228%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/thoughtsjulierogers.jpg?resize=228%2C300&amp;ssl=1 228w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/thoughtsjulierogers.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Thoughts&#8221; by Julie Rogers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Am I willing to make sacrifices for those blessings?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Am I looking for the miracle of my own salvation along with all others?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do I live my life with daily gratitude and humility that He will save me?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do I Live the Law of Sacrifice?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sacrifice isn\u2019t talked about much in our society anymore. The world doesn\u2019t want us to sacrifice. It wants us to \u201chave what we deserve\u201d almost immediately. But a true Saint recognizes that we can\u2019t have it all. There are things that must be sacrificed. Worldly pleasures and desires should be at the top of that list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We talk about the sacrifices made by our parents <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">or the pioneers, but we don\u2019t talk about what we are willing to sacrifice. In the final talk of this session, Ezra Taft Benson teaches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1979\/04\/this-is-a-day-of-sacrifice?lang=eng\">\u201cThis is a Day of Sacrifice.\u201d<\/a> Quoting Joseph Smith, he said,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt is in vain for persons to fancy to themselves that they are heirs with those \u2026 who have offered their all in sacrifice \u2026 unless they, in like manner, offer unto him the same sacrifice\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/lecturesonfaith.com\/\">(Lectures on Faith, 6:8)<\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Those who have sacrificed before us must see our sacrifice in order to make their own worthwhile. Together, our sacrifice in refusing wicked offerings takes power away from Satan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pres. Benson further reminds us what Moroni said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/moro\/10.32\">(Moroni 10:32)<\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Christ-reaching.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9288\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Christ-reaching-151x300.jpg?resize=151%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Christ-reaching.jpg?resize=151%2C300&amp;ssl=1 151w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Christ-reaching.jpg?w=352&amp;ssl=1 352w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><\/a>Satan knows how to make things enticing, politically correct, and all-inclusive all while inviting people to \u201clove Satan more than God. And men began from that time forth to be carnal, sensual, and devilish\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/pgp\/moses\/5.13\">(Moses 5:13)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A Saint will want to sacrifice all those things that fight against a belief in God. Sacrifice teaches humility, gratitude, and devotion toward the one, true God. President Benson ends his talk with this powerful statement:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOne of Satan\u2019s greatest tools is pride: to cause a man or a woman to center so much attention on self that he or she becomes insensitive to their Creator or fellow beings. It\u2019s a cause for discontent, divorce, teenage rebellion, family indebtedness, and most other problems we face.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As we know, pride is the downfall of the Nephites. It also does great damage to our own generation.
