Robison, what would become the world-famous Relief Society \u201dSinging Mothers\u201d was organized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Calibri;\">Since most women, at this time, were mothers, the name felt appropriate.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>But in Oslo, Norway, where there were many single sisters, the name \u201cSinging Sisters\u201d was used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Every ward had their own singing group that practiced regularly.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The standard dress was a dark skirt and a white shirt.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Pres. Robison figured every woman had that in their closets already and wouldn\u2019t need to purchase anything new.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>With that simple uniform, it was easy for wards to get together as a stake for conference, or stake groups could get together for Regional or General Conferences.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Calibri;\">Throughout these years, the Singing Mothers broadcast programs over KSL Radio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Calibri;\">Singing Mother groups formed in various Relief Societies all over the world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>They reported from Stuttgart to Argentina.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Women were learning about music, how to sing, and how to prepare music for various meetings and conferences.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Many European sisters expressed how singing helped them get through the war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Calibri;\">1500 Singing Mothers prepared to sing for the Relief Society Centennial, in 1942.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The celebration was canceled, however, because of rations<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/the-singing-mothers\/singing-mothers-1961\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8582\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8582\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/Singing-Mothers-1961-300x235.jpg?resize=300%2C235\" alt=\"Singing Mothers 1961\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/Singing-Mothers-1961.jpg?resize=300%2C235&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/Singing-Mothers-1961.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> caused by the war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Calibri;\">If a Relief Society was small and not musically inclined, it didn\u2019t stop them from forming a choir anyway.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The enthusiasm for song and camaraderie spurred them toward success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Calibri;\">I wonder what happened to the Singing Mothers?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wonder what happened to music practice and music appreciation in our Relief Society meetings?<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the middle of the Great Depression, under the direction of General Relief Society President, Louise Y.
