A General Conference Odyssey<\/a> post for October 1980<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I love Hallmark. Yes, a lot of the movies are corny and mushy, but I love the happy family expectation of it all. Oh, wait a minute, they aren\u2019t like that anymore. Now, they\u2019re full of divorce, infidelity, and fairy tale solutions that never really add up to the importance of strong\u00a0<\/span>marriage and family relationships. Pixar actually does a better job\"\"<\/a> of that in their animations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chastity, using restraint and responsibility, seems to be a taboo subject in our world. I recently decided to quit watching a show about a broken family whose mother walked out when the children were young. When a daughter faces an ugly divorce, the father pulls the entire family together, including the dead-beat mother, and suddenly everyone is getting along without even talking about the past. How does that work? But, somewhere, amidst this irresponsible fairy-taling,<\/span>\u00a0there still appears to be minor friction because Hollywood simply likes it that way. What messages are they portraying for marriages and families?<\/span><\/p>\n

Thank goodness we have a prophet who really does teach truth, purpose, and destiny about our marriages and families. And boy, did President Kimball<\/a> do just that during this October 1980 opening session.<\/a> In fact, because he had so much to say on the topic, he added an even longer talk<\/a> about it in both the Ensign and New Era magazine issues the \"\"<\/a>following month. I\u2019m just going to list the highlights, but I urge you to read these talks for yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201cSo many of the difficulties which beset the family today stem from the breaking of the seventh commandment: \u2018Thou shalt not commit adultery\u2019\u201d (Exodus 20:14<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cRising generations who have been taught that authority and loving discipline are wrong will not keep the fifth commandment, honoring their fathers and mothers\u201d (see Exodus 20:12<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cThere is no lack of clarity in what the Lord has told us. We cannot shirk. He has placed the responsibility directly where it belongs, and he holds us accountable with regard to the duties of parents to teach their children correct principles and of the need to walk uprightly before the Lord\u2014and there is no substitute for teaching our children by the eloquence of example.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If that isn\u2019t enough to get you thinking, these are highlights from his even longer talk<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Necking,\u00a0Petting,\u00a0Fornication: \u201cOne\u00a0may\u00a0do\u00a0as\u00a0he\u00a0pleases,\u00a0but\u00a0he cannot\u00a0evade responsibility.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Dating Standards: \u201cDating\u00a0and\u00a0especially\u00a0steady\u00a0dating\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0early\u00a0teens\u00a0is most hazardous.\u00a0It\u00a0distorts\u00a0the\u00a0whole\u00a0picture\u00a0of life.”<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Self-Abuse: \u201cMasturbation,\u00a0a\u00a0rather\u00a0common\u00a0indiscretion,\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0approved of the Lord nor\u00a0of\u00a0his\u00a0church,\u00a0regardless\u00a0of\u00a0what\u00a0may\u00a0have been\u00a0said\u00a0by\u00a0others\u00a0whose ‘norms’ are lower.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Homosexuality: \u201cIf\u00a0one\u00a0has\u00a0such desires\u00a0and\u00a0tendencies,\u00a0he\u00a0overcomes them\u00a0the\u00a0 same as if\u00a0he had\u00a0the\u00a0urge\u00a0toward\u00a0petting\u00a0or\u00a0fornication\u00a0or\u00a0adultery.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. Repentance: \u201cThe\u00a0discontinuance\u00a0must\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0permanent\u00a0one.\u00a0True repentance does\u00a0not permit\u00a0repetition.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      These are his final, pleading words: <\/span><\/p>\n

      \n

      \u201cWe\u00a0pray\u00a0for\u00a0you\u00a0that\u00a0you\u00a0will\u00a0keep\u00a0<\/span>yourselves\u00a0<\/span>clean. Clean\u2014we mean clean <\/span>from beginning to end. Free from all the ugly things the world is pushing upon us\u2014the drugs, and drinking, and smoking, the vulgarity, the pornography\u2014all those things you don\u2019t need to participate in. You must\"\"<\/a> not give yourselves to them. Put on the full armor of God.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

      I close with my own testimony that the family is ordained of God<\/a> and must be kept sacred and protected. Satan knows that if he can destroy individuals, he will destroy families. He also knows if he can destroy families, he will destroy our Heavenly Father\u2019s Plan of Salvation. But because Jesus Christ came, fulfilled His mission literally saving the world, He will win the war. And because of Jesus Christ, we can choose for ourselves, using restraint and responsibility, to repent, be redeemed, become better people, and have our families with us for eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n
