{"id":99,"date":"2008-09-01T18:48:15","date_gmt":"2008-09-02T00:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/?p=99"},"modified":"2018-02-12T22:22:15","modified_gmt":"2018-02-13T04:22:15","slug":"sarah-granger-kimball-other-great-sisters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/01\/sarah-granger-kimball-other-great-sisters\/","title":{"rendered":"Sarah Granger Kimball"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1521\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1521\" style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/kimball_sarah.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1521\" title=\"kimball_sarah\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ldswomenofgod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/kimball_sarah.jpg?resize=228%2C300\" alt=\"Sarah Melissa Granger Kimball\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sarah Melissa Granger Kimball<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sarah Granger Kimball was a newly married woman, living in Nauvoo.\u00a0 Her husband was wealthy, and with some available money, she and her seamstress, Mary Cook,\u00a0decided to invite other women to give what service they could to the temple building by making shirts for the workers.\u00a0 This little sewing group was the impetus of\u00a0our first Relief Society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sarah was born in New York in 1818.\u00a0 Her parents first learned of the church shortly after the Book of Mormon was published.\u00a0 It was a vision her father had, of the prophet Moroni bearing testimony of the book to him, that brought the family into the church, and they remained faithful to the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Her husband, Hiram, was not a member of the church at that time.\u00a0 But Sarah was bold and made sure her husband knew where she stood in the gospel.\u00a0 From her autobiography, written in the Woman\u2019s Exponent, on Sept 1, 1883, she explains:\u00a0 My husband came to my bedside and as he was admiring our three days old darling, I said, &#8216;What is the boy worth.&#8217;\u00a0 He replied &#8216;I don\u2019t know he is worth a great deal.&#8217;\u00a0 I said\u00a0&#8216; is he worth a thousand dollars?&#8217;\u00a0 The reply was &#8216;Yes, more than that if he lives and does well.&#8217;\u00a0 I said &#8216;Half of him is mine is it not?&#8217; &#8216;Yes I suppose so.&#8217;\u00a0 &#8216;Then I have something to help on the Temple.&#8217; (pleasantly) &#8216;You have?&#8217;\u00a0 &#8216;Yes, and I think of turning my share right in as tithing.&#8217;\u00a0 &#8216;Well, I\u2019ll think about that.&#8217;\u00a0 Hiram went to Bro.\u00a0Joseph to see what he thought of this tithing donation.\u00a0 Joseph accepted the child readily and offered that Hiram give the child to the church immediately for $500, or keep the child for a $500 donation.\u00a0 Hiram asked if he could donate land instead, which again, was readily accepted.\u00a0 He eventually joined the church and the family moved on to the Salt Lake Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At one point, Hiram, a wealthy man, lost his money and the family became destitute, so Sarah began teaching school in her home.\u00a0 This provided a simple, yet comfortable, life for the family.\u00a0 Years later, while sailing to the Sandwich Islands to serve a mission, Hiram\u2019s ship exploded leaving Sarah a widow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sarah served as the Relief Society President of the 15th Ward for forty years.\u00a0 She served concurrently as General Relief Society Secretary and Vice President of the Relief Society for twelve of those years.\u00a0 She also served as the President of the Utah Woman\u2019s Suffrage Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This remarkable woman\u00a0was there at the first meeting of the Relief Society.\u00a0 It is through her recollection that we know Joseph Smith said, &#8220;The Church was never perfectly organized until the women were thus organized.&#8221; (stated in the same Woman&#8217;s Exponent article as above.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She was a leader in the suffrage movement where her outspoken voice was compared to Susan B.
