The way they got there can actually help Relief Society reach its own potential. This is what Relief Society can learn from Disney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Disney teaches every employee about their purpose and their mission. They do it by being intentional and overmanaging. And it works. So, let\u2019s see what Relief Society might look like using these principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">First of all, we need to clarify the difference between purpose and mission. Purpose is the reason why we do something. It instills ownership, fuels passion, and builds community <a href=\"https:\/\/www.disneyinstitute.com\/blog\/mission-versus-purpose-whats-the-difference\/\">(Disney\u2019s words)<\/a>. Mission involves the operation, the strategy, and the motivation of what you want to accomplish. The mission is how you fulfill your purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I\u2019ve merely taken Disney\u2019s ideas and put them into Relief Society language.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Purpose<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Disney&#8217;s purpose is to literally be the happiest place on earth. For all employees to understand this Disney talks about the history of the company and the dream-like future they strive to attain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Every sister needs to understand the purpose of Relief Society. Its history shows how our early sisters understood this purpose. Knowing why Relief Society is important to the Restoration of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will instill ownership in its membership, it will fuel passion and love for it, and it will build community and eternal friendships. It will most importantly ensure that we fulfill our marked destiny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The purpose of Relief Society is to \u201crelieve the wants of the distressed and do all the good we can.\u201d It is to \u201cset an example for all the world.\u201d It is also to \u201cpurge out iniquity.\u201d \u201cThis Society shall have power to command Queens\u201d and to \u201csave souls\u201d (Quotes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchhistorianspress.org\/the-first-fifty-years-of-relief-society\/part-1\/1-2?lang=eng\">The Female Relief Society of Nauvoo Minute Book)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Mission<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What makes Disney unique is that they work very hard to stick to the mission at hand. They stay focused and they work together in that focus until it is accomplished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Each of our General Relief Society Presidents has focused on her unique mission while in office. It has not changed the purpose of Relief Society, but according to her natural abilities, the spirit has led her to emphasize certain aspects that define her presidency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Every ward Relief Society president will find greater satisfaction when she can define her mission to her sisters during the course of her calling. It doesn\u2019t change the purpose of Relief Society, but according to her natural abilities, the spirit can lead her to emphasize certain focus areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Intentional<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When I learned that Disney uses this particular word to emphasize their teaching, I immediately remembered when President Nelson talked about \u201cintentional parenting\u201d in one of his addresses (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/2015\/04\/the-sabbath-is-a-delight?lang=eng\">\u201cThe Sabbath is a Delight<\/a>,\u201d April 2015).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What would our Relief Societies be like if presidents were \u201cintentional\u201d with how they led their sisters? A defined mission that brings everyone on board to stay focused could make a huge difference in what is accomplished in that Relief Society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/disneyinstitute\/james\/overmanaging.html\">Overmanaging<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When you see this word, don\u2019t mistake it for micromanaging. Disney\u2019s definition is to pay attention to the little details. Every employee is an important asset to the company and every job is important in fulfilling the purpose of making Disneyland the happiest place. Overmanaging ensures that the <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/women-collage.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7862\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/women-collage.jpg?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/women-collage.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/women-collage.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/women-collage.jpg?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/women-collage.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.reliefsocietywomen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/women-collage.jpg?w=2000&amp;ssl=1 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>leaders are truly leading and seeing that the mission becomes everyone\u2019s focus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Because Relief Society is a spiritual organization, it cannot ever compete with the world. It must always allow itself to be led by the Spirit. When the mission is set by the president, and supported by the sisters, it will likely become the powerful, spiritual support it was always meant to be in relieving the wants of the distressed, setting an example for all the world, purging out iniquity, having power to command Queens (we are the queens!), and saving souls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Now, Relief Society is not Disney, nor should Relief Society be compared to them.
