I’m still reading through my conference talks. My favorites list keeps growing, and I just have to express some of my thoughts, so here’s my take on You Know Enough, by Elder Neil L. Andersen.
The thing that prevents people from fulfilling their destiny, more than anything else, is fear/insecurities. We have an excuse for anything, and if you give me a minute I’ll come up with a couple more for everything. Some fears are valid. When we have been raised in a situation that makes us not trust people, or we’ve lead a cushy life and suddenly that life has been taken out from under us, that can all throw us for a loop and it’s hard to recover from it. But that’s when we need God the most, to pull us up from our boot straps and show us the way; which He does every time.
Elder Andersen talks about while dealing with our own personal struggles, we deny God as well. We refuse to recognize those times when we feel Him near. Everyone of us has had a moment of despair, when we felt completely alone, yet somehow knew we weren’t completely alone. Our problems don’t go away, but acknowledging that God is there, is enough to keep us going until things get better. I love how he puts it, “He didn’t know everything, but he knew enough.” and “Our faith becomes simple and pure. We come to know what we already knew.”
He tells a sweet story about a little girl, Hadley, who was born deaf. Her loving parents did much to help the situation physically by allowing surgery that brought limited hearing, but more importantly, her parents gave her knowledge of the gospel and a loving Father in Heaven. One day, she sees a boy, in a wheelchair, with no legs. She loudly comments on this unusual scene. Any ordinary parent would cringe with embarrassment and rush far away without a word of explanation, or worse an over-reactive burst of anger. This mother whispered, “Heavenly Father makes all of His children different.” The little girl, accepting this, begins explaining the anticipation and glories of the resurrection to this little boy. “Jesus will make everything all right.” Elder Andersen concludes, “Hadley knew enough.”
Knowing God IS enough. Knowing Heavenly Father’s Plan for me is so incredibly life-sustaining. We have a place and it’s in our Father’s hearts. Knowing Jesus Christ is enough. Knowing He gave His life for me encourages me to face life head on. So much of this world believes in just one God, and that’s only when it’s convenient to them. We believe in three Gods who know us, love us, and are watching out for us always and forever. The Holy Ghost, who loves us just as much, is the conduit for our Heavenly Father’s and our Savior’s love for us. This knowledge is enough to keep us going when times get tough. But as our knowledge grows, we begin to realize that love is why everything good and bad happens, because God “makes everything all right”.
