A Parable for Our Day

There is a great parable, especially for our day, found in Doctrine and Covenants 101. Starting with verse 44:

v 44: A certain nobleman (Jesus Christ) had a spot of land, very choice (in this case, Independence, Missouri, but it could likewise be our stakes, our homes, whatever is our Zion); and he said unto his servants (us): Go ye unto my vineyard (wards and homes), even upon this very choice piece of land, and plant twelve olive-trees (12 Stakes of Zion, or in other words, establish the church in this area, certainly in your homes);
v 45: And set watchmen (the Priesthood) round about them, and build a tower (temple), that one may overlook the land round about, to be a watchman upon the tower, that mine olive-trees may not be broken down when the enemy shall come to spoil and take upon themselves the fruit of my vineyard (we must stand guard and protect our families, our wards and stakes, by surrounding ourselves with the temple, the Priesthood-which is not “a man” in this case, but the power of God, strong testimonies, faith, and action).
v 46: Now, the servants of the nobleman went and did as their lord commanded them (this is key), and planted the olive-trees, and built a hedge round about, and set watchmen, and began to build a tower. (Alma 48-think of Captain Moroni)
v 47: And while they were yet laying the foundation thereof, they began to say among themselves: And what need hath my lord of this tower? (Do we ever question the Prophet, the Bishop, the RS President, the husband, Jesus Christ Himself?)
v 48: And consulted for a long time, saying among themselves: What need hath my lord of this tower, seeing this is a time of peace? (When things are going well in our lives, why bother praying, attending all of our meetings, including temple attendance. For that matter, there’s always time later for visiting teaching, emergency preparedness, family history work, etc.)
v49: Might not this money be given to the exchangers? For there is no need of these things. (I can’t pay tithing, more fast offering, or kick in money for humanitarian projects when I have a mess-load of debt to deal with and/or fun things to buy instead.)
v 50: And while they were at variance one with another they became very slothful, and they hearkened not unto the commandments of their lord. (Without unity, we are nothing.)
v 51: And the enemy came by night, and broke down the hedge: and the servants of the nobleman arose and were affrighted, and fled; and the enemy destroyed their works, and broke down the olive-trees. (Only half of the virgins were with oil. Pride, taking offense, disobedience, etc. will break us down and make us fair game to Satan and his followers.)
v 55: And the lord of the vineyard said unto one of his servants: Go and gather together the residue of my servants, and take all the strength of mine house, which are my warriors, my young men (and women-the strength of youth), and they that are of middle age also among all my servants, who are the strength of mine house (Who’s On the Lord’s Side, Who?), save those only whom I have appointed to tarry;
V 56: And go ye straightway unto the land of my vineyard, and redeem my vineyard; for it is mine; I have bought it with money. (We were bought with a price-1 Cor 6:20).

Since the Lord has already paid for our sins, who are we to question His methods? No ward or home is perfect, yet they still belong to the Lord, who is perfect. It is through the Holy Spirit that the ward or home functions at all. As we tap into perfect inspiration, let us fortify our hedges, keep our virtue intact, and build up our temples unto the Lord, so that when He comes we are not caught unawares.
